ReplyHere's the best tip for staying healthy and having high-quality nutritious food to eat:
START A GARDEN IMMEDIATELY. Rip up your lawn, get tested soil, and create a raised bed.
Why is this the best means to stay healthy? Because you will be producing the vegetables yourself and will not need to pay for them.
What do you think will happen when the Dollar dies? What do you think will happen when, not if, we have a currency collapse of the dollar - when it is no longer the world's reserve currency? It is already happening. The BRIC's (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are planning on it. Iran is accepting gold as payment for their oil. China is working hard to make a gold-backed Yuan the reserve currency.
When the Dollar dies, everything you buy will skyrocket in price. Very little manufacturing is done in this country. You will no longer have the advantage of the dollar's currency status which gives the US an incredible advantage in the pricing of imported items. Oil, which is traded in dollars, and is used in EVERY part of production of food, will double or triple in price overnight.
We will have instant Hyperinflation. Think the Weimar Republic in Germany. Think twenty dollars for a loaf of bread.
And what is the single item you don't want to live without? Food.
Food is trucked using oil, grown using oil, refrigerated using oil, and bought with dollars.
Do you enjoy having food? Then start a garden NOW.

ReplyI also live on a private way near to these lots.
I think we also should consider turning these lots into city gardening plots for food production.
Food security is becoming an increasingly recognized issue. With inflation driving the price of food upwards, having local plots of land available for food production would help families obtain low-cost, high quality vegetables.
The Forest Hills neighborhood has lots of green space, parks, and even an herb garden (Leland Street), but no nearby land available for growing vegetables in a dedicated fashion like other neighborhoods.
Local food production would also help lower the carbon footprint of vegetables grown in California and Mexico and then refrigerated and driven to New England.
The Kendall Foundation is looking to do exactly this - increase local food production in New England - check out their website. Perhaps they could help leverage the funds necessary to create this.
In any case, I applaud Julie for thinking creatively. The City was here earlier in the winter taking photos of these lots, intending to clean up the lots and eventually put them up for bid. If you see a better use for these lots than additional housing, then now is the time to put your ideas up for community support.

ReplyWho cares what the local Catholic priest thinks of the selection? The only group I would be interested in hearing from would be the group of children and adults who were sexually abused by Catholic priests.

ReplyExcellent work, Mr. Silverberg. Now this is reality-based journalism, free from political-correctness.
Now we have a better description of this individual. But there could be more -
Estimated age: Teens, twenties, thirties, forties?
Body type: Muscular? Svelte? Obese?
Accent: Boston?, foreign-born?, Spanish speaking?
Do the police have a sketch based on the descriptions of the victims?Soon, the average person might actually have a chance of identifying this individual.

ReplyIs there anything missing from this description...? I'm sure that the police were given a complete description of the suspect, but the citizens cannot be trusted with this information.
You can change your clothes...
You can shave...
The gun will be hidden until just before it is used...So here is the description - be on the lookout for a 6 foot 1 inch male.

ReplyIf you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear stained eyes
Don't be surprised, when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice

The country is now in a tizzy. The government is coming to the rescue. There will be calls for more security and safety measures. Obama will use this incident to push his gun control agenda, even though a gun wasn’t used. The death of an 8 year old will be the rallying cry for the statists to take more of your liberties and freedoms away. The politicians will use this incident to spend more of your money on police, cameras, DHS armored vehicles, SWAT teams, listening surveillance, and predator drones. How many billions have we spent since 9/11 on these agencies? Did they stop this bombing? Will spending another $10 billion stop some crazy person from dropping a homemade pipe bomb in a trash can? Will more cameras and drones keep someone from walking into a crowded mall and throwing a few hand grenades or mowing people down with an AK-47? Will a background check stop a determined terrorist? The calls for government to do more will be echoing on TV screens for the coming weeks. The passive sheep-like populace will shake their heads and mistakenly believe that government will protect them. There will always be bad guys who do bad stuff. Life is always a tragedy that ends in death.
