ReplyBarbara Rhodes the children's librarian at the JP Branch Library has inspired hundreds of JP kids (and their families) - with amazing activities and boundless enthusiasm. Actually, all the staff at the JP Branch are pretty great!

Replythe Hatch Shell is just one part of a whole week of amazing activities - not just for tourists - called Boston Harborest. All the details are here: http://www.bostonharborfest.com/
What better time than Independence Day to remind ourselves we live in the City where that idea really took shape and to explore some of the spaces that help create our nation? -

Replythanks for the shout-out for the Woodbourne tour on Saturday. 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the Boston Dwellinghouse Company who created the "worker's paradise" -- the struggle for affordable housing isn't a new one!! Hope folks come out to hear the story, the weather should be grand.

ReplyAn alternative to giving books to this for profit company is to bring them to the JP Branch Library - where the Friends will be having a book sale on May 18th and 19th. All proceeds of which go to supporting our local community instituions...

ReplyBoz, this is exactly why I wrote. The Trustees of the BPL set up the branches to allow any person in the City to walk to a branch (that was back when the Trustees actually cared about patrons in the neighborhoods). The JP Branch, Egleston Square and the Connolly are serving different areas of JP/Roxbury and are doing that so well - and that is what is supposed to happen. Here's a report from the 1950s which talks about how to determine how many branches there should be and what those buildings should be like: http://archive.org/details/bostonsbranchlib00bost.

ReplyBob, libraries are definitely relevant. During the last quarter that there are stats for (Oct- Dec 2011) http://www.bpl.org/general/about/usagestats_FY12Q2.pdf nearly 79,000 ebooks were checked out. There were 200,000 computer sessions, 2,733 programs were held attended by 47,000 people. 756,013 visited a BPL branch.
Tell the knitters on Thursday nights, the JP Poets on Saturday mornings, the youth who helped with homework every afternoon or the whole bunch of kids who attend story time each week at the JP Branch their library is irrelevant, I dare ya!

I disagree with the sub-heading on this article. You can have BOTH preservation and development - and the JP/South Huntington corridor is ample proof. Look at that streetscape, which has a wealth of 19th/early 20th century builldings that have been preserved and expanded in the last decade. The Brewery Lofts, Hope Lodge, Mount Pleasant Home --- all are great examples. We need more housing in JP but we also need to respect our history and our unique character. Asking for both is NOT asking too much.
