Jamaica Plain Patch's Teacher of the Year

2011 will be a year of transitions for everyone at the Agassiz School.  Teachers and students must find new school communities in the wake of the closing that was confirmed by the Boston School Committee last Wednesday.  Jamaica Plain Patch asked Principal Maria Cordon to select one of the Agassiz's teachers as JP Teacher of the Year for 2010. Armando Landing is leading his small class of wiggly boys through their morning meeting.  He asks if anyone can count to 20.  One boy says he can do it—in Spanish.  Mr. Landing code-switches without missing a beat and invites him to show what he can do.  After he and the other children say their "Bravos", Landing asks if he might want to try now in English. Buoyed by his success in his native tongue…
