Readers React to Empty South St. Storefronts

Three addresses are vacant at this section of South Street.

The citizens of Jamaica Plain have spoken: they want a variety of businesses to line the main commercial sectors of the neighborhood. When Jamaica Plain Patch published a photo of a section of South Street with three vacant storefronts, the public responded with ideas on what should move into the space: Nicole Pittman said: "Peace o' Pie!! (Vegan pizza place!)" Eddie G. said: "I would love to see a taco place (we need one of those), coffee shop or a even a wine and cheese shop. But please just like the above JP residents and posters stated, NO MORE SALONS!" Lindsay LeClair said: "It would be nice to have a gluten free bakery or a non-vintage consignment store." If it were up to you, what would you place at the spaces between 166 and 170 …

What Businesses Do You Want to See at this South Street Block?

Three addresses are vacant at this section of South Street.

Next to J.P. Variety Store there are three vacant spaces which used to be local businesses. The vacancies are at 166, 168 and 170 South St. At least one of the businesses used to be a hair salon – with a sign depicting the face of Scarlett Johansson – another was once a cleaners. Based on previous articles which posed the same question, many wanted a new Italian restaurant, a butchery or a new clothing store But what businesses would be perfect to round out this particular commercial block on South Street near Forest Hills? Leave your opinion in the comments.

Baez was also ordered to pay $3.2 million in restitution to victims. Baez stacked gasoline-soaked tires in front three garage bay doors at Jamaica Plain Auto Body and ignited them April 29, 2009, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press statement. Food Trucks on JP: "Great Place Open a Small Biz"

The BBQSmith and Cupcakory food trucks continue to serve JP residents while Bon Me promises to come back in warmer weather.

Jamaica Plain residents Jon Leib and Emily Broad-Leib couldn’t resist getting some fresh BBQ from the food truck BBQSmith while they walked their dog Lula along South Street one recent Saturday.  Nor could they resist getting a cupcake once the Cupcakory van pulled up.  “I’m a big fan of food trucks,” Leib said.  “I like it because it’s really good food cheap, [it’s] funky, fresh.” BBQ Smith, purveyor of smoked pork sandwiches and veggie tacos, sets up shop from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Loring-Greenough House parking lot at 12 South St., while the Cupcakory usually joins them from 1-3 p.m., though sometimes it ends up being 2-4 p.m.  Both would like to continue vending through the winter – or at least until the customers stop coming. “[…
