South End Resident Wu to Vie For City Council

Wu, a Harvard graduate, recently worked for the Elizabeth Warren campaign and the City of Boston.

South End resident Michelle Wu filed with the Office of Campaign and Political Finance this week as a candidate for one of Boston’s four At-Large City Council seats.  "I’m running because I believe in Boston and I believe that in city government we can make changes," Wu said.   Wu, 27, is an attorney and former law student of U.S. Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren. She most recently worked full-time on the Warren campaign, where she directed statewide outreach to communities of color.    "Boston’s greatesest strength is diversity and the city council should reflect that diversty," she said. "Over 50 percent of the population in Boston is female and there's currently only one woman on the entire Boston City Council." Prior to the Warren …

I worked with Michelle to bring Elizabeth Warren together with the leaders of statewide disability groups. Frankly, I was amazed with her commitment and followup: given that we could get paste Browns' scheduler, the fact that Michelle called and emailed often prior to the event to make sure accommodation were in place was great. Stolen Computer in Jamaica Plain Turns into Feel Good Story in South End

A Jamaica Plain resident who had his laptop stolen traced it to a South End address, but what he found was not what he expected.

Fran Harrington, a Jamaica Plain resident, had not his first, not his second, but his third laptop stolen a few weeks ago when someone broke into his Greenough Avenue home. Considering he already had two laptops stolen, it's not surprising that Harrington had installed GPS tracking software onto the machine. But what was surprising was the story that played out when he found it. Harrington and Boston Police Detectives were able to track his laptop to an address on Harrison Avenue in the South End. But, according to Harrington, the detective working with him told him a family had spent $900 on the stolen computer — without, they say, knowing it had been stolen. The computer was a gift to their son to take off to college in September.  "It …

Boston's Largest Whole Foods to Be Built in South End

The new 50,000 square foot supermarket to be built on Harrison Avenue will be the largest Whole Foods store in Boston, and the first full-sized grocery store in the South End neighborhood.

The South End is finally getting its own full-sized grocery store. The largest Whole Foods store in Boston will be built on Harrison Avenue in the South End, with a projected opening date of sometime in 2014, according to the Boston Business Journal. The 50,000 square foot organic supermarket will be the largest retailer of a $200 million mixed use residential and commercial development project known as "Ink Block," the site of the former Boston Herald building.  By contrast, the chain's Jamaica Plain store is a tiny 13,700 square feet. If you've ever been to the Dedham Whole Foods, it clocks in at 60,000 square feet. The South End Whole Foods store will include an outdoor sidewalk café with seating on Harrison Avenue, a wine store and a …

VIDEO: Obama "Represents the Best of the Democratic Philosophy"

Boston residents had a celebratory mood despite the dreary weather during President Obama's visit.

A crowd of supporters gathered outside the South End Cyclorama on Wednesday hoping to catch a glimpse of the President as he made his way to a fundraiser for his 2012 re-election campaign.

President Obama's Boston Visit Delights Supporters, Draws Protesters

The president was in town for a fundraiser at the Cyclorama in the South End.

Information provided by pool reporter Donovan Slack of the Boston Globe via White House Media Affairs. “Our Colors are red, white and blue. Our coach is Obama.” Those were the words of Celtics All-Star Ray Allen during a campaign fundraiser for President Barack Obama at the South End Cyclorama Wednesday evening. Allen and Hall-of-Famer Bill Russell were on hand to rev up a capacity crowd of nearly 900 at the kick-off event, one of two appearances expected to raise over $2 million for Obama’s re-election campaign. “It's going to take a lot of dedication and a lot of work, a lot of sweat,” Allen said. Other speakers included Massachusetts governor and long-time Obama supporter Deval Patrick, who listed off the president’s accomplishments, …

Radical Bookstore is Heading for Jamaica Plain

The one-of-a-kind Lucy Parsons Center in the South End is relocating this summer to a Hyde Square space next to Alex's Chimis.

The Lucy Parsons Center will be leaving the South End at some point in the not-too-distant future, bound for Jamaica Plain. From now until an as-yet-undetermined moving day, select items are discounted up to 80 percent off. Although the radical-bookstore-cum-community-meeting-facility stands to gain from the move (it will likely see more foot traffic in its new Hyde Square digs, which are next to Alex's Chimis), the South End is at a loss, saying goodbye to an important connection with counter-cultural history. Named after an anarchist/communist labor organizer thought by many to be genuinely dangerous, the store harks to the tree-shaking mood of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s and is truly one-of-a-kind in today's Boston. “I’ve been …
