Ahead of the oncoming storm, Mayor Thomas Menino has canceled schools in Boston Friday.
Boston Public Schools will be closed on Friday, Feb. 8 because of the impending snowstorm. Mayor Thomas Menino has declared a snow emergency in effect beginning at noon on Friday. The storm is expected to drop as much as two feet of snow on the city and will last into Saturday afternoon. Along with classes, all Boston Public School activities that were scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday have been canceled, according to the district website. This includes all athletic events. All Family Resource Centers will also be closed on Friday. "Only essential personnel should report to work," according to the district website. 2011 will be a year of transitions for everyone at the Agassiz School. Teachers and students must find new school communities in the wake of the closing that was confirmed by the Boston School Committee last Wednesday. Jamaica Plain Patch asked Principal Maria Cordon to select one of the Agassiz's teachers as JP Teacher of the Year for 2010. Armando Landing is leading his small class of wiggly boys through their morning meeting. He asks if anyone can count to 20. One boy says he can do it—in Spanish.
