Agassiz Supporters Decry Planned Closing of JP School
Plans to close Agassiz school, and others, met with strong opposition.
The auditorium at the English High School was filled with concerned parents, some of them angry, during last night's School Committee hearing. The focus was on the city's Redesign and Reinvest program, part of which calls for the closing and merging of several area schools. One of the schools threatened is Agassiz Elementary. Agassiz parent Wayne Wilson declared he is "not giving this up without a fight." He announced plans to hire an attorney and fight the vote. "It is too important for families in this community," Wilson said. School officials say there are a number of factors prompting a move like this, among them a significant number of empty seats and a budget gap.
