The Oct. 13 battle will pit seven food trucks from Boston against ones from New York City.
If you love food and you hate New York, you're going to want to head downtown this weekend for the first ever Boston vs. New York City Food Truck Throwdown. The daylong competition pits seven food trucks from Boston against seven food trucks from New York City as contestants vie for the title of Best Food Truck. The idea for the event came from Sara Ross, owner of Kickass Cupcakes, and is supported from the city of Boston, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and the Boston food truck community. In addition to the food, of course, there will be live music and celebrity judges. Admission to the event is free but sampling any of the food will cost you. Boston Contenders include: Bon Me, Kickass Cupcakes, Lobsta Love, Mei Mei Street Kitchen, Roxy’s …

The tapas bar/record shop/book store started serving brunch for the first time last weekend.
Tres Gatos, the combination tapas bar/record shop/book store on Centre Street, has started serving brunch. The new service began last weekend, according to owner David Doyle. Brunch is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. "After brunch, we'll be offering a light bar menu from 2 to 5 p.m., then our normal dinner service will begin at 5:30 p.m.," Doyle wrote in an email to JP Patch. Here's a look at the new brunch menu — which includes items like chickpea pancakes. Tres Gatos joins a JP brunch scene that has more options than it used to. [Editor's note: Business owners — If you have news to share with the community please email me. I aim to put together these "Business Notes" posts regularly.]

A Latin-themed lounge replaces a dive bar on Washington Street.
The former Old Stag Tavern in Egleston Square was a dive bar legend: cheap beer enhanced and made bearable (and enjoyable) by an insufferable jukebox selection, X-rated video games, tacky velvet paintings and pool table heroes. When it closed earlier this year—rat infestations, noise complaints, seedy bathrooms and all—many wondered who would take over the Washington Street space that once hosted raucous drag queen nights and ironic Beyoncé sing-alongs. And puzzled how they’d ever get the stale smoke stank out of the place. Coco’s Lounge opened its doors this summer. Impressively displaying little remnants of its former tenant, the spiffed-up spot plays up brick-exposed walls with sleek wooden flooring, shiny fixtures and simple (generic) …

Same Old Place’s most popular sub is a thing of legend—and legacy.
While it’s thrilling to witness the Jamaica Plain restaurant scene evolve, it’s easy to take a joint like Same Old Place for granted. The family-owned pizzeria and sub shop on Centre Street has been a neighborhood mainstay for decades, and while revered by locals for its Italian pizza and sub sandwiches, the humble hole-in-the-wall spot fails to elicit much contemporary culinary excitement, let alone the hot press buzz reserved for the neighborhood’s newer, flashier restaurants. Still, the place never ceases to pack in the patrons. An unfortunate gang-related shooting at Same Old Place put the eatery on the local news map in late 2010, and just last month, the passing of its founder and owner, Fred Ciampa, made neighborhood headlines. The…

Boston Restaurant Week is back for the summer, and runs from Aug. 19-24 and Aug. 26-31. But no Jamaica Plain restaurants are in the mix.
Boston Restaurant Week is back for the summer, and runs from Aug. 19-24 and Aug. 26-31. From a trendy meal in Back Bay to a classic dining experience in the North End, it's the perfect time to experience a restaurant you've never been to before, and explore the many culinary options Boston has to offer. Also, follow RestoWeekBoston on Twitter for the latest news, recommendations and peeks at local menus. And of course the price is right: With more than 200 restaurants to choose from there's something for everybody. You can search by neighborhood at RestaurantWeekBoston.com. One neighborhood where you won't find any restaurants, though, is our own. That's right. There are zero Jamaica Plain restaurants involved in "Restaurant Week." That's …

Respect is earned not expected. Again, I like the look and the theme. I was there last week:) It’s great to walk down the street and have a few drinks and not worry about driving home. But horns beeping at 1 am and people yelling on my street is not good start. Joe we will let time tell if you and your staff respect your neighbors :)   more ›
