Recycling Your Christmas Tree is Good For the Environment

DPW collects Christmas trees this week and next to compost.

Massachusetts residents purchase one million cut Christmas trees every year, according to the state's Department of Environmental Protection. And with all those trees being cut down, the Commonwealth has made sure residents recycle those trees. Boston neighborhoods will have Department of Public Works employees picking up Christmas trees starting through Jan. 14. Trees will be composted.  Bostonians should put their Christmas trees out before 7 a.m. on your neighborhood's recycling day. To look up your recycling day, visit here. Please remove all ornaments, decorations and stands from trees. Please do not put trees in plastic bags. Thankfully, Boston is not the only Massachusetts municipality that recycles Christmas trees. Basically I'm saying tree recycling is a wonderful thing -- if it actually happens. And that hasn't ever been my experience. Hopefully it's been different for others.   more ›
