T Driver’s Sayings Lift Orange Line Commute

Ja-Ron Freeman has earned a bit of celebrity among Orange Line riders with his positive attitude, safety-first mindset and quotable catch phrases.

“Have a five-star day” or “it takes teamwork to make the dream work” are phrases one might expect to see on an internet meme or hear on a customer service phone call with the cable company. But probably not on the Orange Line. MBTA Orange Line conductor Ja-Ron Freeman has made these phrases his own. He speaks them while driving his train during his entire run through on the Orange Line, but in an interview during his break at North Station Friday, he said motivational clichés are not his intention. "At the end of the day it's all about safety. I don't want anybody to get hurt riding my train," he said. Couched within traditional train speak – “This train is bound for Forest Hills; Keep your hands inside when the doors are closing” – …

Bike or T: Which Do You Prefer?

The Hubway is closing for the winter, but with a new Jamaica Plain-based station in the future, will you side with Boston's latest mode of transportation?

Jamaica Plain is a bike-oriented community, and though many own their own bicycles, a city-run Hubway station could be in the neighborhood's future. Kris Carter, interim director for Boston Bikes, told the Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association Nov. 14 that with sponsorship, JP could have a bike share station in its future. “Everyone knows the easiest way to travel on Centre Street and not have to worry about parking is on a bike,” he said. However, Jamaica Plain already is home to an often-used MBTA Orange Line stop at Forest Hills. Carter said the city was looking at Hyde Square or Jackson Square as possible locations for a Hubway station in the future, but if you're not interested in cycling around town, maybe you prefer …

I totally agree Mark! Thank goodness for the car drivers - all of whom unfailingly drive the speed limit and yield to all pedestrians in the crosswalks. Otherwise the roads would be a nightmare!   more ›

Elevated Orange Line on Display

Photographs of the once elevated Orange Line are on display through January at The Boston Public Library’s Copley location.

Did you know the MBTA’s Orange Line was once elevated? The line’s stops from Chinatown to Dudley Square were on tracks hoisted high above Washington Street. Though the line was dismantled in 1987, you can see how it looked at an exhibit through January. An Elevated View: the Orange Line, an exhibit featuring 65 photographs from between 1901 and 1987 when the Orange Line was elevated is on display at the Wiggin Gallery at Central Library in Copley Square. The photographs are arranged in order of MBTA Orange Line stops from Forest Hills to Dover Station, and are taken from a 1987 project by nonprofit organization URBANARTS, which documented the end of Boston's “El.” On Monday, Jamaica Plain’s Connolly Branch Library hosted a screening of The…

Man Brandishes Blood-Filled Needle at Minors Who Asked Him to Buy Them Booze

A man went back on his deal to buy booze for two underage kids at Forest Hills Liquor. When the kids wanted their money back, he allegedly stuck a needle in his arm, filled it with his blood and told them he has AIDS.

UPDATE, Wednesday 2:17 p.m.: Soler was arraigned Wednesday on slightly different charges than those with which the Transit Police booked him. Prosecutors charged him with two counts each of armed robbery and assault with a hypodermic needle. His bail was set at $2,500, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. ~~~~~ Minors who had enlisted a man to buy them booze at Forest Hills Liquor were surprised when the man not only went back on the deal — he also threatened them with a blood-filled needle. According to Transit Police, on Tuesday afternoon two teens approached them at the Forest Hills station and laid out the following story: They'd hatched a deal with a man to buy $20 of booze for them, letting him keep $5 as his …
