JP Digs Out: The Blizzard in Your Backyard

Jamaica Plain, like the rest of Boston, got nearly two-feet of snow during the Blizzard of 2013.

As the citizens of Jamaica Plain dig out today, several left lasting memories on various forms of social media while more than 2 feet of snow battered the area. By 8 p.m. Friday, the blizzard was bearing down. While much of the Cape Cod area had power outages, most of the lights in Jamaica Plain stayed on. Though there was a brief power outage scare. @TheMaxWhite tweeted at 8:30: “Power might be about to go out in Jamaica Plain... lots of flickers.” Four-and-a-half hours earlier, a driving ban, ordered by Gov. Deval Patrick, kicked into effect. @Blackcurrents made use of Twitter’s new Vine video player. She tweeted along with the 6-second video: "Deserted and snow covered Jamaica Plain." @LifewithRoozle was out with a ruler as late as 10p.…

Clear Snow, Avoid a Roof Collapse

Light, fluffy snow on rooftops can act as a sponge for rain, which is in the forecast for Monday. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency offers these tips.

With rain in Jamaica Plain's forecast for Monday, the Blizzard of '13 may not be finished wreaking havoc in Massachusetts. While temperatures dropped overnight on Friday resulting in light, fluffy snow, he Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) warns that fluffy snow piled high on roofs can act as a sponge, absorbing rain and adding additional stress to structures. Relatively flat roofs are particularly vulnerable, MEMA says. In other cases, roof ice dams have formed causing water build-up, leading to interior damage. These conditions can accelerate the snowmelt. To minimize the risk of over-stressing a building roof due to accumulated or drifting snow: Information from a release by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (…

YES - there's TOO MUCH SNOW! I JUST saw a first plow here since FRIDAY...I'm amazed it took so long, but I know the storm was bad. Still, our cars are TOTALLY buried and there's no where to put it. I don't know how many of us will get to work tomorrow. I may not! Very frustrated. I wish they could bring tanks of HOT WATER and just spray the cars and street!   more ›

Snow to Continue Through the Morning

As of 10:20 p.m. Friday, snow will begin to taper off this afternoon.

The snow came down in sheets beginning at about 7 p.m. last night, and it will continue through the morning. According to the National Weather Service, it will continue to snow today until about 4 p.m., with a possible additional foot of accumulation through Saturday. The snow will be gone by Sunday though and Jamaica Plain will have plenty of digging out to do as drifts began to creep as high as one foot during the 10 o’clock hour Friday. Jamaica Plain Patch will provide weather updates throughout the day. Follow JP Patch on Twitter and like us on Facebook for more information.
