MSPCA-Angell: Watch Out for Dogs in Hot Weather

The temperature is (finally) rising in Boston. See why owners should be mindful of dogs in the hot weather.

The following is a message from MSPCA-Angell, headquartered in Jamaica Plain: In anticipation of...warming temperatures, veterinarians at Angell Animal Medical Center are cautioning dog owners to take greater care in acclimating their pets to the heat, as the first few days of Spring bring the greatest risk of overheating.  According to Dr. Kiko Bracker, a veterinarian in Angell’s Emergency & Critical Care Unit, dogs at the greatest risk of suffering heat-related illness during the Spring are older, brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds or those with existing illnesses affecting their respiratory tract or heart.  Studies in humans repeatedly show that people need two to three weeks to acclimatize to warmer temperatures—and the veterinary …

Kitten Saved from Lax Net Looking for Home

Is "Annette" right for your home?

A 3-month-old kitten found trapped in a lacrosse net needs a new home. “Annette,” which the staff at MSPCA named her, was found on a Highland Street athletic field in Brookline completely tangled in a lacrosse net, according to Rob Halpin, spokesman for Angell-MSPCA. Hearing Annette’s cries, a good Samaritan saved the animal and brought it to the Jamaica Plain facility. Though the kitten’s leg was swollen to nearly twice its normal size, its leg was not broken. Now, MSPCA is hoping she can find a home. “Shelter staff report that Annette will require a quiet adoptive home, preferably without young children or dogs,” Halpin says in the statement. “Her ordeal has left her frightened and the MSPCA hopes to find the perfect home in which she …

PHOTOS: Cat Caught in Leg Hold Trap Rushed to Angell Animal Medical Center

With Paw Ensnared, “Max” Managed to Drag Himself Home.

Despite having his right front paw ensnared in an illegally placed leg hold trap yesterday afternoon, three-year-old Maine Coon mix “Max” managed to find his way home to his family.  His owners, Victoria and Michael Kickham, were shocked to see Max limping toward the front porch, dragging the rusty steel trap as he walked.  They were able to remove the trap from Max’s paw before rushing the frightened feline to Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, Mass. Once at Angell, emergency veterinarian Dr. Kiko Bracker administered pain medicine and ordered x-rays to determine the extent of the damage to Max’s paw.  Luckily for Max, he suffered only puncture wounds and none of the bones in his foot or leg had been broken.  Said Dr. Bracker…

Dog Maimed in Escalator at Forest Hills MBTA Station

The Pomeranian mix ran up an escalator and caught a rear leg in the teeth at the top. The dog lost two toes but is expected to recover.

A Dorchester woman's little dog ran up an escalator at the Forest Hills T and got a back leg caught in the machinery. Mace, a 9-month-old Pomeranian mix, lost two toes but is expected to recover, according to veterinarians who treated him at the MSCPA in Jamaica Plain. The dog's owner told CBS Boston that her niece ran up the escalator the Sunday before last. The dog followed. Mace's back left paw became entangled at the top where "combs" meet the escalator steps. "When he got to the top of the escalator, he screeched and I ran to the top and picked him up," owner Tonecia Johnson told CBS Boston. "He was so scared he tried to run into me and then I looked down and blood just started gushing from his foot." The news station has footage of …

Oh, so sad! I always pick up my dog on the escalator. Of course, he's small. If you have a large dog, I think I would avoid escalators altogether.   more ›
