'Gentrification': One View on What It Means for Jamaica Plain

Speakers shared their views of the roots of gentrification.

Editor's note: Gentrification, or urban revitalization, is a vital topic in Jamaica Plain today. While neighborhoods have always been ever-changing, today there is increased scrutiny of what makes those neighborhoods change. This article does not pretend to cover the whole topic, but instead covers one meeting last week in Jamaica Plain that offered up one viewpoint. Jamaica Plain Patch will make every effort to provide balanced coverage of this topic. Gentrification is a problem -- caused by capitalism -- that needs to be solved. Hundreds of Job Seekers Pack English High for Career Fair

Hundreds of job seekers, 28 employers, and career services providers were present.

Tuesday evening the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, JobNet, and the JP Community Centers Adult Learning Program hosted a career fair at English High. Even though recently there has been a light drop in unemployment, worker idling levels nation-wide continue at historic highs. Against this backdrop, several organizations in JP are assisting people with finding jobs. The Adult Learning Program of the Jamaica Plain Community Centers “is a community-based adult education program dedicated to the empowerment of adults in advocating for themselves, their families and their communities through the provision of free basic education, ESOL [English for Speakers of Other Languages] and high school diploma programs,” according the …

City Board Approves Home for the Formerly Homeless in Parkside

The Boston Redevelopment Authority approved renovating the former Barbara McInnis House under "fast track" rules that send the project straight to the Mayor's desk.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority approved a plan to renovate the vacant building at 461 Walnut Ave. on Tuesday night. The plan, presented by the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, is to transform the structure into a 20-bed respite care center for homeless people, as well as build 30 studio apartments for transitioning homeless people plus and a resident manager's unit. Respite care is for people who are not sick enough to justify a hospital visit, but aren't well enough to live in a shelter.  The project came before the BRA because of a number of zoning variances required for the project. In its current state, its medical use does not conform to the surrounding three-family homes. Chapter 121A provides a fast track …
