Despite the snow, the system should undergo a “full launch” the first or second week of April.
There’s still snow on the ground and it still feels like the dead of winter, but a staple of summer in Boston will be back online before you know it, and possibly in Jamaica Plain soon thereafter. Bicycles will be available throughout the Hubway bike sharing system the first or second week of April, according to Nicole Freedman, director of bicycle programs for the city of Boston. Freedman also said that Hubway officials still have their sights set on setting up a network of stations in Jamaica Plain. "We're very optimistic," she said of a JP expansion. She said the JP stations would be opened in late summer. Faulkner Hospital is reportedly interested in sponsoring a station in Jamaica Plain. Thirty to 50 stations will be reopened …

The Hubway bicycle share system has taken off in Boston in its first two seasons.
Boston’s popular three-season bicycle share system has done more than provide residents with a quick, cheap mode of transportation, it's taken a few cars off the road in the process. Nicole Freedman, director of bicycle programs for the city of Boston, said 13 percent of the 675,000 rides taken in the first two years of the Hubway system are “car replacement” rides, according to survey data collected by the city. In other words, those riders signaled that if not for their Hubway bike ride, they would be driving, Freedman said. That amounts to 87,750 rides that were taken on a bicycle as opposed to in a car. The Hubway system has been available to the public for about 240 days per year in its first two seasons, Freedman said. The system, …

A city official said in order to have a station in a neighborhood a network would have to be built.
Jamaica Plain could get a Hubway bike sharing station this year, but it’s a long shot. In order for the Hubway system to flow correctly, one stand-alone station would not suffice, according to Nicole Freedman, director of bicycle programs for the city of Boston. “For us to go into JP to do it in a way that will be successful, we know we need a certain minimum number of stations,” she said. The average Hubway ride is under a mile, and no two Hubway stations are more than a quarter-mile apart, so despite sponsorship interest a station is not being imminently planned in Jamaica Plain, Freedman said. Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain has expressed interest in sponsoring a station. A sponsor must commit $50,000 per year for …

I think that they could start with a docking station by all the Orange Line stations (Jackson, Stony Brook, Green, & Forest Hills). They would all be along the Lallement Bike Path which is already a bike commuter highway and thus close to the next docking station and other forms of transit.   more ›

To sponsor a Hubway bicycle station, a sponsor must commit $50,000 per year for three years.
Boston’s Hubway bike-sharing system soared in popularity in its second year, and though there is no station in Jamaica Plain yet, there could be one coming soon. Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital is “very interested” in sponsoring a Jamaica Plain Hubway station, Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association member Michael Reiskind said at a Wednesday meeting. David Goldberg, director of marketing and public affairs for Faulkner, confirmed the hospital's interest via email. "Yes, we are interested in sponsoring a Hubway station in JP," Goldberg wrote. "Admittedly, we don't know too much about it and are looking into it a bit further but one of our goals for the future is to be a bit more proactive in supporting local, healthy …

I support bikes..... but the Faulkner is closing it's well-known and well-respected drug and alcohol detox facility. This is bad news for Boston and JP, not to mention the literally 10's of thousands of suffering addicts who's lives have been saved at "7 South" which refers to the floor where treatment takes place. The Faulkner should either be encouraged or brought to task to seriously …   more ›

The Hubway is closing for the winter, but with a new Jamaica Plain-based station in the future, will you side with Boston's latest mode of transportation?
Jamaica Plain is a bike-oriented community, and though many own their own bicycles, a city-run Hubway station could be in the neighborhood's future. Kris Carter, interim director for Boston Bikes, told the Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association Nov. 14 that with sponsorship, JP could have a bike share station in its future. “Everyone knows the easiest way to travel on Centre Street and not have to worry about parking is on a bike,” he said. However, Jamaica Plain already is home to an often-used MBTA Orange Line stop at Forest Hills. Carter said the city was looking at Hyde Square or Jackson Square as possible locations for a Hubway station in the future, but if you're not interested in cycling around town, maybe you prefer …

This is pretty deceptive.... hosting a hubway location means the host has TO PAY HUBWAY for the privilege (one might have guessed Hubway would appreciate having the space donated). I had in mind a wonderful location smack dab in the middle of JP Centre St but PAYING for it, as opposed to BEING paid to provide the space means that location can't work (non-profit location)   more ›
