How Many JP Residents Own their Homes?
JP has one of the highest home ownership rates in the city.
Here’s an unexpected rule of thumb: the more likely a tourist is to visit a Boston neighborhood, the less likely the residents of that neighborhood are to own their own homes. According to the city’s 2012 assessment data, Jamaica Plain's 02130 zip code has the sixth-highest home ownership rate in the city. In fact, the five neighborhoods ahead of JP on the list—West Roxbury, Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan and the portion of Boston near Boston College—all cluster toward the city’s southwestern border, where convention-goers and out-of-towners infrequently visit. Interesting. Couple things - areas that have high ownership are more likely to be family-friendly with family amenities, like parks, good schools and not so walk able - basically boring for tourists. Area with lots of renter will skew younger with younger amenities - cool restaurants, place to eat and drink, funky shops and importantly, and very walkable.
