Warren Wants to Debate One Last Time; Brown Doesn't

The Democratic challenger and Republican incumbent in the much-watched race for the Senate are at odds on whether the reschedule their final debate.

Democratic Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren wants to hold a final debate with Scott Brown after all — but it's not clear the incumbent Republican Senator will agree to it. On Monday, both camps in the down-to-the-wire election cancelled a debate that was to have been held Tuesday night. They cited safety concerns surrounding Hurricane Sandy. "It is simply not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes," a Brown press aide said in a statement on Monday. "The focus for all of us before, during and after the storm needs to be on emergency response and disaster relief, not campaigns and politics." Warren's camp followed suit shortly afterward on Monday with their own statement. "Elizabeth believes the debate …

Brown, Warren Both Drop Out of Final Debate

Both camps issued statements declining the planned exchange.

Both Republican Senator Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren bowed out of Tuesday's final televised debate, citing safety concerns surrounding Hurricane Sandy. Brown's camp was the first to announce its decision, releasing a statement at 4:22 p.m. Monday. "The Scott Brown campaign today announced that out of concern for the hardship faced by people in the path of Hurricane Sandy that he will not be participating in tomorrow's fourth and final debate," said Brown Communication Director Colin Reed. "It is simply not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes. The focus for all of us before, during and after the storm needs to be on emergency response and disaster relief, not campaigns and …

Boston Herald Endorses Brown; Warren Also Picks Up Nods

The Boston Herald endorsed Senator Scott Brown on Wednesday; his Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren has recently had several endorsements as well.

The Boston Herald endorsed Senator Scott Brown on Wednesday, praising what the newspaper called his "fiscal sanity and bipartisanship." Brown would be more likely than his Democratic foe, the Herald editorial board argued, to stay out of lockstep with their respective party leadership. "Democrats have made much of the fact that, should he win election to a full term, Brown would represent a vote in favor of the current GOP leadership. But Brown at least has a track record of breaking with that same GOP leadership and representing a more moderate voice," wrote the Herald editorial board. "We’re less certain that Elizabeth Warren would challenge Harry Reid & Co. on important issues." Endorsement season is in full swing, as the election looms…

Warren Up in Polls, Herald Endorses Brown: Who's Winning?

With Warren holding a small lead in the polls, and Brown getting a key endorsement from the Boston Herald, who do you think has the momentum coming into the final days of the election?

Democrat Elizabeth Warren is up by five points over incumbent Republican Scott Brown in the latest WBUR/MassINC poll of the Massachusetts senate race. That's a near-total reversal of the BUR poll last month, which had Brown up by four on Oct. 9. In fact, Warren has been trending upwards in most recent polling. The New York Times' FiveThirtyEight blog has Warren up by four in an average of recent polls. The blog, which uses advanced statistical modeling akin to baseball sabermetrics (think Moneyball) gives Warren an 89 percent chance of winning the election. But Brown's got some significant energy on his side as well. He's been barnstorming the state with political luminaries like Senator John McCain and today won the Boston herald's …

'JP Has Had My Back All The Way Through' — Elizabeth Warren Stumps at Doyle's

The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Elizabeth Warren, stopped by Doyle's on Tuesday to fire up her supporters.

Democratic Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren stopped by Doyle's on Tuesday amid a throng of enthusiastic supporters. She greeted sign-holders outside the historic bar, which has a long history of hosting politicians. The law professor and consumer advocate posed in the driver's seat of truck fitted out with big Elizabeth Warren signs in the bed. JP Realtor Stephen Lussier, the owner of the truck, said the vehicle is a counterpoint to Senator Scott Brown's iconic truck. Once inside Doyle's, Warren was pressed into service as a "bartender," pouring a Guiness stout and a Harp for the crowd. Boston politicians warmed up the crowd with brief speeches. Speakers included City Councilors Ayanna Pressley, Felix Arroyo and Matt O'Malley. All of them …

Senate Candidate Elizabeth Warren Comes to Doyle's on Tuesday Evening

The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Elizabeth Warren, is scheduled to visit Doyle's in JP at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren plans to visit Doyle's on Tuesday evening. The Democrat's campaign said she will be at the historic watering hole at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Warren, a law professor and consumer advocate, has visited JP before during her tough campaign to unseat incumbent Senator Scott Brown, a Republican. Brown has also visited the neighborhood recently, the JP Gazette reported. The last time Warren was campaigning in JP, she met with people whose homes were being foreclosed. The home of one of the people she met, Heather Gordon, had been in foreclosure since 2008. According to real estate records, a sale is pending for the 3 Mendell Way home. The Brown campaign has not responded to requests from JP Patch to be kept apprised …

Warren Out-Fundraises Brown in Third Quarter by Several Million

Warren out raised Brown by $4.5 million in the third quarter, according to fundraising totals released on Monday by each campaign.

U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren's campaign announced Monday it has raised more than $12.1 million in the third quarter this year, out-raising Senator Scott Brown by $4.5 million. Brown's campaign had its best fundraising total to date this quarter, at $7.45 million. The Brown campaign enters the home stretch with approximately $10.2 million cash on hand.  About 80 percent of Warren's contributors were donation amounts of $50 or less, and $7 million was raised in September alone, the campaign said. “Tens of thousands of people across Massachusetts have joined this campaign because they know that Elizabeth will fight for them in the U.S. Senate,” said Michael Pratt, Finance Director.  "This strong support will help propel the campaign…

Who Won Latest Debate: Scott Brown or Elizabeth Warren?

Held in Springfield, this debate focused more on issues, less on personal attacks.

Vital issues core to this race for the U.S. Senate — taxes, healthcare, soaring higher education costs, abortion, insurance coverage of contraception — were the focus of last night's debate between Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren.  And, of course, there were different views of which candidate accomplished the most in this penultimate debate. The final debate between them is scheduled for Oct. 30. Who do you think 'won' last night's debate? Tell us in the comments section below.

Brown, Warren Go Head to Head in Third Senate Debate

Who do you think won the third matchup between Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren? Which moments stood out to you the most?

Senator Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren met for their third debate on Wednesday night in Springfield, this time each appearing more at ease and both with their best performances to date.  Here are the five biggest moments of the hour-long debate moderated by Jim Madigan.  Discrepancies in Higher Education Brown's biggest moment of the debate was when he cornered Warren over the issue of the rising costs of higher education. Warren, a professor at Harvard University, noted that Brown voted against a bill that sought to keep student loan interests low, because it would have closed a loophole for millionaires.  But Brown came back by saying the reason the costs of higher education are skyrocketing are because of administrative …

Scott Brown Picks Up Endorsement from Former Mass. Gov. Weld

William Weld endorsed incumbent U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown on Friday.

Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld endorsed incumbent U.S. Senator Scott Brown on Friday, calling him a "breath of fresh air," and "motivated by open-minded independence." “Scott isn’t swayed by pressure from the special interests, but rather by what makes good sense for the people of Massachusetts,"  said Weld. "He is a sorely-needed moderate voice, and his independent streak is exactly what we need to break through the partisan gridlock that too often grips Washington, D.C."  The endorsement came during a press conference at Brown's South Boston headquarters. Brown, a Republican, is in what polls say is a tight race with Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren. Brown credited Weld with "helping to bring the Massachusetts economy …
