PHOTOS: Somerville Out Moves JP in Dance-off

The event, held at Good Life downtown, raised funds for Girls Rock Camp Boston.

Nothing settles a rivalry like a good, ole fashioned dance-off. Although the trash talk flowed freely, everyone enjoyed themselves at the JP vs. Somerville Dance-off Sunday night at the Good Life in downtown Boston. The JP team put up a good fight, but in the end, the judges named Somerville the winner. The event's proceeds benefitted Girls Rock Camp Boston, a non-profit that works to develop self esteem in young women through music and performance education.

Glitter, Glam & Good Times at the Artists' Ball

The creatively-clad crowded the Footlight Club to show their support for JP Centre/South Main Streets, which will now hold First Thursdays year-round.

On Saturday night, normally down-to-earth JP’ers put down their garden tools and left their dog leashes and bike helmets behind for a night of glitz and gaiety at the 9th Annual Artists’ Ball.   The pre-Halloween fundraiser for JP Centre/South Main Streets recalled scenes from Mardi Gras or the Carnival in Venice as the creatively-clad community crowded the Footlight Club to show their support for the organization. Some of the merrimakers who masqueraded at the benefit included Jeff Ferris of Ferris Wheels Bike Shop accompanied by his date, an incognito caricature of Barbara Streisand.  Jim and Susan Petrik of JP Licks fame arrived in head-turning full Renaissance regalia.   Like many of those present, Patti and Larry McKenna of JP wore …

The Great Escape: Dancing Under the Stars

Parents: This week's Great Escape (from the kids) is free outdoor music in Boston.

Each week columnist Mary Hannon brings parents an idea for what to do with any time you can finagle away from the kids. Escape outdoors again and enjoy some free concerts.  I’ve sent you outdoors a lot lately, but why not? We only get about three solid months of good outdoor weather. Despite the heat, by evening we usually have a decent breeze and it cools off a bit making evenings delightful.  So, take advantage of the situation and find things to do outdoors. Grab your lawn chair, your picnic basket and go hear some live music.  There is music of all genres and every day of the week.  We have the trusted Hatch Shell location by the Charles River which is easily accessible by the T and there is a series of live concerts in various genres…

Country-Western and Line Dancing At The Milky Way

Every Thursday at 1 pm, we'll bring you a photo gallery of people and places in the neighborhood. Every Tuesday night at 7 pm, The Milky Way Restaurant and Lounge hosts Dirty Water Saloon Country-Western & Line Dancing. From 7-8:15 p.m. instructors teach West Coast Swing and Line Dancing. From  8:15-10 p.m., there is open dancing.
