Facial Detection App Coming to Boston Clubs: Useful or Creepy?

A new app uses facial detection technology to tell you how many men and women are at the club, and how old they are. Will this help you plan your Saturday night or is it a creepy tool for guys to stalk women?

SceneTap is coming to Boston. According to Boston.com, the social app can tell you the gender mix and age of a club's patrons. The app is connected to facial detection technology installed at participating clubs. Those cameras use an algorithm to determine whether a patron entering the club is a man or woman. It can also determine the approximate age of the person. Anyone using the app can then, for example, see that there's a lot of women in their 20's at one club, but an older, more male crowd at another. SceneTap's patent application goes beyond facial detection, however, and includes language about facial recognition. Recognition tools can be used to determine who that actual individual is, rather than just their gender and age. …

And The Best Music Venue in Jamaica Plain Is...

It was, predictably, a race between The Milky Way and The Midway.

This week's Best of Patch Readers' Choice Contest asked, "What's the neighborhood's best music venue?" It's not surprising that this quickly became a contest between JP's two most prominent night-spots for music: The Milky Way and The Midway. While support was strong for both clubs, The Milky Way came out on top, winning both the poll and getting the most points for resident reviews. Putting together this week's contest brought home for me how much music we have here in the neighborhood. Just about any night, you can find live music. Sometimes it's tucked away in unexpected places. I hope this contest introduced you to some venues you might not have known about. With all due respect to the The Milky Way and The Midway, the Patch's choice of words for the contest could and should have exercised a better choice of words. "Best" is very subjective, its definition resting in the mind of the reader. What we had here was a contest for "most popular".
