The snow will melt eventually, and the city is looking at ways to clean up trash on the streets in the warm months.
The merchants of Jamaica Plain have begun a push to clean up trash on the streets – primarily Centre Street. But as it turns out, readers feel the rest of Jamaica Plain need more attention. Reader Michael said: "With all due respect, we need street sweeping on Washington Street in Stonybrook/Egleston FAR worse than Centre Street." Crews have spread across the city to remove remaining snow piles.
The city is coordinating an effort to remove leftover - and abundant - snow piles. Snow Strike Force teams, comprised of members from the Boston Public Works Department, Boston Transportation Department, Boston Police Department, and the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, were in Egleston Square Monday afternoon, according to a press release from Mayor Thomas Menino's office Monday afternoon. Jamaica Plain was buried in more than 2 feet of snow for what seemed like the duration of the storm and into Sunday and Monday. Though the rain and warm weather has helped melt some of the snow, slush, water and snow drifts have made driving extremely difficult along the side streets. RE: Washington St from Forest Hills to Egleston Sq. - amen! And Stan Hatoffs is a serious hotspot. Street sweeping would be great, but in the interest of not unnecessarily increasing municipal costs and instead raising new revenue, how about some stepped up enforcement/fines?!
