ANSWERED: Guess the Restaurant

Can you name which Jamaica Plain establishment served this burger?

UPDATE, Monday: And, as readers guessed, this burger is from Canary Square. Thanks everyone! I'll have to make next Saturday's one a bit harder. ~~~~~ Welcome to a new JP Patch feature, one that I hope you'll find entertaining. Each Saturday I'll post a photo from a dish I've eaten at a JP restaurant. In the comment section, make your guess about which restaurant served the meal. I'll circle back with the answer on Monday. Take a look at this week's meal and Guess the Restaurant in the comments. Good luck!

(To below pothead Michael) Actually my above comment was written on my iPad, which is not the easiest devise to type messages with. Also my observational skills far exceed your. If you actually ate other things besides pot brownie and left you opium dent to visit Canary Sq. you would realize that you have to purchase and order them separately. But maybe the bong has been to tangent to your face …   more ›

Vegging Out

A Vegetarian View of Jamaica Plain's Burger Bar, Grass Fed

Despite Grass Fed’s dependence on its namesake beef burgers, with its emphasis on local, organic and healthy ingredients, the casual yet quality eatery earnestly and deliciously accommodates non-carnivores.

It’s been more than two decades since a hamburger has passed my lips but I can’t say that I’ve been denied anything at all.  Thanks to veggieburger makers like Morningstar Farms, Dr. Praeger’s and Trader Joe’s, I’ve been able to enjoy the all-American sandwich as well as any red-blooded citizen. Although I had heard in advance that Grass Fed offers meatless options, as I approached the Centre Street eatery last Friday, I still felt a little like I was going to the Outback for a salad.  In order to avoid the crowds that have reportedly packed the restaurant since it began business little more than a week before; I had arranged to meet a friend at the eatery not long after it opened at 11 a.m.  Even at that early hour, the new burger bar …

I have seen those films, but none of them address the fundamental reason of why I am vegan. I am vegan because I believe that unnecessary violence--to animals, to our bodies, to the planet--is wrong. Because we can survive without eating animals, consuming them means participating in unnecessary suffering and death, regardless of whether they came from a small farm or a factory farm. This short …   more ›

Burger Bar Culture Arrives in Jamaica Plain

Krista Kranyak’s riff on fast food fare hits the mark with newly-opened Grass Fed.

It’s a measure of Krista Kranyak’s love for Jamaica Plain that she opened Grass Fed here last month. The casual and sleek burger bar was a concept previously lacking in JP’s growing culinary landscape. When the former Bon Savor space became available last fall, after the owners became locked out of the country in a heavily chronicled visa saga, Kranyak jumped on the opportunity to take over the property, just three doors down from her flagship and much-lauded Ten Tables restaurant on Centre Street. “I was focused for some time on a concept where quality food could be served in a fast food setting,” says Kranyak, who owns and operates three successful Ten Tables franchises with locations in JP, Cambridge and Provincetown. “I wanted my menu …

I got a cheeseburger and thought it was delicious (and I was raised on grass/cornfed beef in southeastern Kansas many years ago) -- my father was cooking outdoor grilled burgers back almost before there were outdoor grills (late 1940's). I know my beef!! And the size was fine - don't know what Mark expects... I would not call 5 oz "lady-size" American restaurants have oversized everything and we'…   more ›

A Burger Bar, GrassFed, Opens in Jamaica Plain

The long-anticipated opening brought throngs out to the new burger bar.

On the first full day of opening for JP's new burger bar, GrassFed, customers had a pronounced tendency to walk in the door, look around and smile. I went for lunch with Mrs. JP Patch and noticed that dynamic on most of the folks who came in after we were seated on our window-facing counter stools. The much-anticipated restaurant drew a big crowd. And for a burger joint, the menu holds more variety than you might expect. For instance, JP's Ali Mahood enjoyed a ground chicken burger, the Italian Stallion, which comes with mozzarella and pesto. "You never find a ground chicken burger," said Mahood, who recommends the restaurant's smokey house-made "A10" sauce as "nectar of the gods." Her lunch companion was a vegetarian venturing into what …

It took me a long while to finally make it into Grass Fed--I don't like standing in long lines. I appreciated: the "bun-less" option, generous serving sizes, simple beer selection, friendly staff, and overall quality of the ingredients. But I was seriously disappointed in two critical areas: the acoustics are absolutely terrible and the salt content was off-the-charts! It surprises me that …   more ›

New Details Emerge About GrassFed, a Burger Bar for Jamaica Plain

Krista Kranyak, owner of the new "GrassFed" burger bar on Centre, passed muster with a committee of the Neighborhood Council on Tuesday.

A burger bar that has generated lots of buzz among Boston carnivores has a tentative opening date of Feb. 20. Krista Kranyak, owner of GrassFed, which is going into the old Bon Savor space at the corner of Centre and Pond, passed muster with the elected volunteers of the JP Neighborhood Council committee on Tuesday. The burger bar would also serve beer, wine and "adult milkshakes" spiked with cordials. GrassFed isn't seeking a full liquor license. Traditional cocktails won't be served. "You can't come in and order a Maker's Mark on the rocks," Kranyak said. Alcohol will only be served with food orders. Kranyak said the space would have counter service, with a layout similar to that of the City Feed location on Centre. There will be 21 bar …

A Burger Bar — "GrassFed" — to Open Feb. 1

On Wednesday, Ten Tables made official a rumor that has been circulating for more than a month: That it will open a "burger bar" in the former Bon Savor space.

It's official: JP is getting a burger bar in the space that used to be Bon Savor. The rumor has been causing salivation among burger lovers for more than a month. On Wednesday morning, Ten Tables confirmed, via its Twitter account, that its owner, Krista Kranyak will open "GrassFed" on Feb. 1. The 605 Centre St. space opened up after the owners of Bon Savor were denied visas to return to the U.S. Ten Tables and its TT Bar are just steps from the new burger bar. Ten Tables, which also has locations in Cambridge and Provincetown, is known for its use of local ingredients and warm service.

Horrible service and food. Nothing like 10 tables. They actually forbid you to take food to go and refuse to cook your burger to order even though they have signs claiming too. Small portions and high prices   more ›

Jamaica Plain's Five Best Burgers

Click through the photos to find the five best local burgers to eat…right now.

Ask anyone where to get the best burger in Boston and you're sure to get a mixed bag of responses, if not spark a heated foodie debate. It seems everyone's got their favorite burger, and there's tons of beef getting some serious hype in this city (including the newsworthy and expensive Radius burger in the financial district which gets this writer's vote. It's pure burger perfection.)  But as the debate wages on in burger blogs and amongst burger enthusiasts, our humble JP burgers remain largely bereft of praise. Why's that? There's certainly no shortage of burgers on menus around the neighborhood. Are our burgers being overlooked? Or are they simply—gasp!—just not that praiseworthy?  I recently loosened up my belt, grabbed some non-…
