Boston Police have stepped up patrols and surveillance of the Eliot Street neighborhood after two gunpoint robberies last week.

Citizens and police officials remain on alert following a pair of Eliot Street gunpoint robberies last week; crimes which the police captain of the E-13 district called out of character for the neighborhood. “It’s highly unusual particularly to have two robberies in two nights down there,” Boston Police District E-13 Captain Paul Russell said in an interview. Russell referred to the crimes – one at the Eliot School and one on Dunster Road on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, respectively – as an “aberration.” “Overall in the neighborhood we’ve had a great start to the year,” he added. Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 25, violent crime in Jamaica Plain is down 36 percent over the same period in 2012, Russell said. The suspect in last week's robberies, …

Eliot School Organizes Volunteer Safety Patrol

Following the recent robberies – one of an Eliot School teacher – the school is asking for volunteers to stand outside during late afternoon and night hours.

After two gunpoint robberies last week, Abigail Norman, director of the Eliot School, is looking for volunteers to participate in a neighborhood watch and patrols. “I would like to organize groups of neighbors and volunteers to stand out in the evenings,” Norman wrote in an email to the neighborhood Saturday. “As a school, our greatest need is during the periods around 6:30-7pm and 9-9:30pm when students travel to and from our classes. Sunset right now is around 5:40, so I imagine the neighborhood would like groups to be out starting around that time as people come home from work and after-school activities.” To participate, email anorman@eliotschool.org. Police Use Honda Civic as Car Thief 'Bait'

A donated 2000 Honda Civic will be used by the Boston Police Department for the purpose of catching car thieves.

Apparently, catching car thieves and fishing are more similar than you think.  Thanks to a donation to the Boston Police Department, detectives will now be using "bait," a 2000 Honda Civic, to catch car thieves in the city.  The choice of a 2000 Honda Civic as "bait" was deliberate, as it's listed as the most stolen car in Massachusetts. In Boston in 2012, 1,575 cars were reported stolen, according to the Boston Police Department, with 106 thefts reported in Jamaica Plain's E-13 area.  The car was a donation from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which lists the 1998 Honda Civic as the most stolen vehicle in Massachusetts, according to the most recents statistics. "The 2000 Honda Civic is used as bait for car thieves," said Boston …

Note to all cars thieves: the city ingeniously decided to advertise what car is being used as a "bait" car. All other cars are not the bait car. Luckily the police thought it prudent not to name the dates and locations but as long as you don;t steal a 2000 Honda Civic there is apparently NO CHANCE it's a bait car. Good call BPD.   more ›
