The District 6 city councilor will address the needs of the community while taking feedback from citizens.
Matt O’Malley, Boston City Councilor from District 6, will host a “town meeting” tonight for Jamaica Plain residents. It will be his third annual Jamaica Plain meeting; he’s held six since he has been elected to the city council in 2013, the other three being in West Roxbury. The Jamaica Plain resident will take questions, present a power point demonstration and try to get an overall sense of where the citizens of Jamaica Plain are now and where they would like to be going in the future. “It’s a great opportunity to check in with residents,” he said. O’Malley has been pushing green energy initiatives and urban agriculture and farming of late, but he wants to address questions about the new school assignment plan, JP development issues and …
Boston's elected officials have worked with Mayor Thomas Menino for years. They weigh in on his decision to not seek re-election.
Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston's longest standing mayor, will not run for office this November. As the Hub's mayor for 20 years, he leaves behind a legacy with the city's citizens and elected officials. Jamaica Plain's Matt O'Malley, Boston City Councilor for District 6 has served on the council since 2010. He said he was "surprised and saddened" by Menino's decision. "This is a guy who has been the mayor since I was in the eighth grade," he said. "He served with distrinction and honor. I don’t think anyone can refute the fact that this city is far stronger and better than since before he took over." O'Malley, who said he does not plan to run for mayor, called Menino "as much of a Boston landmark as the Boston Garden or the Custom House." …

All proposed ordinances and special laws are referred to this committee, which also aims to reduce overlap in city functions and programs. The committee also has oversight of the activities of the mayor’s office and numerous committees and boards. During his first year as chair, O’Malley, who represents …
Public bubblers, fountains and filling stations could decrease plastic bottle use and improve health—but where should they go?
"Water, water everywhere, so let's all have a drink," District 6 Boston City Councilor Matt O'Malley said, citing the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, during Wednesday's City Council meeting. O’Malley wants to bring more water bubblers, water fountains and water filling stations to Boston neighborhoods. He pointed to San Francisco which in 2010 installed "tap stations” allowing residents to fill reusable water containers "in a clean and sanitary way." At the stations, people could reuse their own containers rather than purchase single-use bottled water. "Every runner, walker, parent knows park routes, and knows where the iconic bubblers are," O'Malley said. He said he runs at Jamaica Pond because he knows the water fountain at the …
Boston will be updating its zoning code to permit medical marijuana dispensaries in specific areas around the city.
Massachusetts voters spoke loud and clearly on Election Day by overwhelmingly supporting the legalization of medical marijuana starting January 1. Now Boston has to figure out where the medical marijuana dispensaries will be within the city. District 5 City Councilor Rob Consalvo led the charge at Wednesday's Boston City Council meeting, saying while they don't know how many facilities the city will get yet, it's clear they will get some. "I’m proposing what we do regularly - update our zoning code," Consalvo said. "This will be my seventh effort of amending the zoning code. Clearly this is a new use and a new change in front of us." But first the state needs to provide regulations, "We don’t know how the state regulations will take …

Some residents waited more than three hours to vote on Election Day.
More than 65% of registered voters in Boston came out to vote on Election Day - but many of them waited in hour-long lines to vote, with some walking away before casting their ballots. District 2 Boston City Councilor Bill Linehan said he believes there's no reason for voters to wait in line for extended periods, and offered several ways to improve Election Day waiting times. Linehan introduced the matter at Wednesday's Boston City Council meeting. "As we talk about redistricting issues in the last two years, we have some precincts that have too many people," Linehan said. "Those precincts led to lines for 2.5 to 3 hours." Specifically, in District 2, Linehan said four precincts suffered from long lines, and he said one person told him …
The Boston City Council approved a third redistricting map on Wednesday, and now it awaits Menino's approval.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is expected to approve the redistricting map approved by the City Council on Wednesday. A city spokesperson confirmed media reports that Menino would approve the redistricting map. Menino is currently staying at Brigham & Women's Hospital under treatment for a virus and a blood clot in his leg. This was the third redistricting map approved by Boston City Council, and Menino vetoed the first two citing "over-concentration of protected groups" in districts. On Wednesday, the Council approved the new redistricting map, 11-2, with only District Councilors Charles Yancey and Bill Linehan voting against the map. District 6 is the one that represents JP. In the new map, a precinct in Egleston Square that had been part …

The Boston City Council supported a redistricting map, the third one, after the first two were vetoed by Mayor Menino.
The Boston City Council is hoping the third's time the charm for their latest redistricting map submitted to Mayor Thomas Menino on Wednesday. The Council supported a redistricting map at Wednesday's meeting by a vote of 11-2, with the two votes against the map coming from District 4 City Councilor Charles Yancey, and the chair of the Census Committee, District 2 City Councilor Bill Linehan. The map now awaits Menino's approval or disapproval. Menino has vetoed the last two redistricting maps, citing concerns of an "over-concentration of protected groups" in districts both times. The Council-approved map was originally submitted by Councilors Frank Baker, Rob Consalvo and Matt O'Malley. At Wednesday's meeting, District 7 City Councilor …

Hey Mellincoly, my understanding is there were no maps on the table that would've kept Ward 19, Precinct 12 as part of District 6 (i.e. the JP District). That's why I was careful to write the headline "JP Remains (Mostly) Whole..."   more ›

That's my mayah and I'm sad to see him go, but totally understand his decision. I'm one of the 49% who met him (twice) and chatted with him. Really seems like a genuinely caring good guy who's fun to talk with. I hope he still gets out among "his people" occasionally in retirement and that he has an enjoyable, and restful retirement. He's certainly earned it!   more ›
