Is It Cool to Save a Parking Spot in JP?

Chairs and other objects always pop up in shoveled-out spots after each snowstorm. Legally, there's no basis for it, but: is this a neighborhood rule where you live? Do you abide by the "he who dug it" code?

Police have responded to numerous reports this week of neighbors fighting over one of the city's 'hottest' post-blizzard commodities: on-street parking.  While there's no legal basis for the practice, residents will often leave identifying markers in the parking spaces they've spent hours digging out. As the city's emergency lots closed Monday morning, though, some residents seemed to ignore the informal rule.  Readers, we wanted to ask you: is this an unspoken rule in your neighborhood? Have you ever had a parking spot marker ignored? Taken another's space in a fit of desperation?  Share your story and opinion with other readers in our comment section below.

City 'Snow Removal Strike Force' in Egleston

Crews have spread across the city to remove remaining snow piles.

The city is coordinating an effort to remove leftover - and abundant - snow piles. Snow Strike Force teams, comprised of members from the Boston Public Works Department, Boston Transportation Department, Boston Police Department, and the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, were in Egleston Square Monday afternoon, according to a press release from Mayor Thomas Menino's office Monday afternoon. Jamaica Plain was buried in more than 2 feet of snow for what seemed like the duration of the storm and into Sunday and Monday. Though the rain and warm weather has helped melt some of the snow, slush, water and snow drifts have made driving extremely difficult along the side streets. Jamaica Plain residents can tweet at @NotifyBoston if your …

Richard Heath 42 Bourne St No mail delivery on Monday. Snow removal is terrible three days after the snow stopped, Roads like South Street and Bussey St. Wachusett and Weld Ave et al are cart paths. Phone calls to the mayors "hot line" are ignored. It is the 21st century - New England urban area should be better prepared than this. Share Your Photos: How Much Snow Do You Have?

Let's measure the blizzard through lawn ornaments!

We at Patch like to have fun – even when we’re covering a story as big as the Blizzard of ’13! So when the biggest storm in years (potentially in the history of Boston weather) is headed our way, we get into battle mode – and even get a little silly. That’s what this idea is about – and we want you to take part too! A fun way we want to track the storm across Massachusetts is through lawn ornaments. They serve a purpose in the spring and summer, but often feel left out in the cold of winter. Not anymore. We are posting photos of lawn ornaments throughout Massachusetts to highlight snowfall across the commonwealth during and after the storm. All you need to do is hit the Upload Photos and Videos button and upload your own. If we’re stuck at…

It seems that this overreaction by the government and the media has the same effect as political correctness. That is to say it makes us numb to words like "racist" and "dangerous conditions".....so that when we really need to be aware of those problems....we don't hear the warning or care.   more ›

The Purple Cactus to Re-Open During Blizzard

The Centre Street staple has been closed for about three weeks, but the renovations are done and the burrito shop will be open Friday.

The renovations are finished and a popular Centre Street burrito spot is ready to re-open today. The Purple Cactus will open at 11 a.m. Friday, according to owner Marie O'Shea. The shop "looks great," she said. "We did a lot of work. It's a major change for two and a half weeks." She anticipates having to close at around 5 p.m. due to the potential blizzard, but as of 10 a.m., O'Shea said there are no plans to close. The Purple Cactus closed to make renovations and upgrades Jan. 20.
