Bikes Not Bombs Publishes Open Letter on Name

In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings, Bikes Not Bombs offers sympathy and an explanation on the organization’s name.

The name on top of the 28-year-old Jamaica Plain non-profit organization that sends bicycles to communities around the world as a symbol of peace and unity has come into focus following the Boston Marathon bombings. Bikes Not Bombs Executive Director Jodi Sugarman-Brozan wrote an open letterTuesday expressing sadness in the aftermath of the bombings, which left three dead and over 180 injured. In her letter, she pointed to the reason for the name, and why it has stood since the organization’s inception in 1984. “On some level,” she writes, “the bombs we disarm through our work are symbolic. Toxic environmental conditions, street violence, roadblocks to education and employment; young people in Boston and our international partners face …

ADD YOUR OWN PHOTOS: Circle the City Connects Franklin Park and Jamaica Pond

The corridor from Franklin Park to Jamaica Pond was car-free on Sunday. If you have photos or video from the day's celebration, please add them here to share with your neighbors.

Pedestrians and cyclists ruled the road on Sunday in Jamaica Plain, as the Circle the City program made the corridor from Franklin Park to the Pond car-free. The event, created by the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, aimed to showcase the city's parks — and to get people out of their homes and cars. Here are a few photos (and a quick video of a pick-up band playing "Charlie on the MTA"). If you have snaps or videos of the day's festivities, please add them for your neighbors to see.

ADD YOUR OWN PHOTOS: JP Spring Roll

If you were at Sunday's JP Bikes Spring Roll, or captured pics or video as it moved through the neighborhood, add them here for your neighbors to see.

It's the favorite JP event of the year for Forest Hills moms Casey and Michelle Carey-Brown — The JP Bikes Spring Roll. The event brings families out for a community bike ride, preceded by a session of bike-decorating. Other bike-related organizations like Bikes Not Bombs, the Boston Cyclists Union and Ferris Wheels Bike Shop were among the attendees. If you've got pics or video from this year's Spring Roll, please add them here to the ones Casey and Michelle Carey-Brown have already posted.

Jamaica Plain's Five Best Nonprofits

Okay, so the headline is a little provocative. Still, these five are among the very best of the 200-plus nonprofits headquartered in our neighborhood.

Jamaica Plain is rich with venerable, hard-working non-profit organizations and charities. Here are five you should consider giving to. Hyde Square Task Force Why: There's a lot of talk about developing the talents of young people in JP and Roxbury. For my money, no one in JP does that better than Hyde Square Task Force. The peer leaders who come out of this organization tutor younger kids and make a real impact in our neighborhood — like fighting for better sex ed and keeping the former Blessed Sacrament campus mostly affordable housing. Donate to the Hyde Square Task Force via this link. Community Servings Why: The availability of local, healthy food is important to a lot of JP residents. Every day, Community Servings delivers 750 meals …

You forgot to include Boston City Singers - a very accomplished group of young people aged 5-18. Boston City Singers believe that by exploring the world of singing, our singers develop stronger leadership and teamwork skills, experience the power of self-esteem and self-discipline, and enjoy the beauty of artistic expression. They often participate in “Sing for Good” performances raising funds …   more ›

Bikes Not Bombs: It’s all about the bikes and not about the bikes at all

"I get to go to a place every day where people are living their values," says executive director Samantha Wechsler.

You hear it around the neighborhood, “Bikesnotbombs” all run together as if it is just one word.  Bikes Not Bombs is such a fixture in JP, people may not stop to really understand what it is—bike shop? mechanic school?  international development organization? — or to understand completely the breadth and depth of its work. Samantha Wechsler, executive director, and some of her staff took the time to illuminate this unique, multi-issue movement. How did Bikes Not Bombs get started?   Wechsler:  On July 4th 1984, distressed by the number of discarded bicycles on Boston’s streets and by the Reagan Administration’s involvement in Nicaragua, Carl Kurz got on a plane to Nicaragua with two bicycles he’d refurbished and a vision of peace and …
