And the Best Place in Jamaica Plain to Buy Meat and Veggies for the Grill Is...

Neighborhood newcomer Whole Foods ran away with this week's "Best of Patch Readers' Choice" contest.

When my wife Jane and I are walking around the neighborhood and we catch the scent of a backyard (or porch) barbecue, we sing a little song to the tune of Kumbaya. Someone's grillin' Lord Kumbaya... And with Memorial Day fast approaching, residents will be headed to JP stores and markets where they can get the best meats and vegetables to put on those grills. That was the subject of this week's "Best of Patch Readers' Choice" contest. This week the new Whole Foods in Hyde Square won handily. No one added new ratings, which count for half the votes, but Whole Foods won the poll easily. Coming in second was Stop & Shop while Harvest Co-op took third place. Congratulations to Whole Foods and thanks to everyone who voted. Next week's contest …

CONTEST: Where Do You Get JP's Best Grillables?

Memorial Day weekend is coming up soon. Where do you go in JP to get your pork tenderloin or portobellos?

This week's "Best Of Patch Readers' Choice" looks toward Memorial Day barbecues and asks "What's the Best Place to Buy Grillables?" Jamaica Plain has a lot of butcher shops for our size. And since we also have a good number of vegetarian residents, I'm including places to get great vegetables. Here's how it works. Vote in the poll below. Add comments supporting your decision. Rate the businesses involved. Votes and ratings decide the winner, with ties broken by most favorable comments. The poll closes at 9 a.m. Friday. Because this poll isn't scientific, it isn't the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor (that's me, Chris Helms), based on poll results, comments on this story and ratings …

I love supporting local businesses, but the Green Street Supermarket is hardly a great choice for food.   more ›

CONTEST: Milky Way Takes Lead For "Best Music Venue" in Jamaica Plain

When you want to hear live music here in the neighborhood, where do you go?

This week's "Best Of Patch Readers' Choice" asks "What's the Best Music Venue in JP?" Now at first thought you might think this is a contest between the Midway and the Milky Way. But while those are arguably the neighborhood's most visible venues, there are lots of other places to hear live music. The JP Patch calendar is chock full of them. Here's how it works. Vote in the poll below. Add comments supporting your decision. Rate the venues involved. Votes and ratings decide the winner, with ties broken by most favorable comments. The poll closes at 9 a.m. Friday. Because this poll isn't scientific, it isn't the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor (that's me, Chris Helms), based on poll…

CONTEST: What is Jamaica Plain's Hidden Gem?

This week's Best of Patch Readers' Choice contest asks what's the single greatest unsung bit of awesomeness our neighborhood has to offer.

This week's "Best Of Patch Readers' Choice" contest is a fun one: What's Jamaica Plain's Hidden Gem? I asked folks on the JP Patch Facebook page for nominations, and added some of my own. I'm sure this is not a complete list of our hidden gems. Please bring others up in the comments section. I can't add them to the contest, but a good discussion is my real aim with these features. The winner will be determined by the Patch …

I love Jamaica Pond, I'm an avid visitor to Arnold Arboretum, I have visited the lovely hidden Minton Stable Gardens, and I have strolled in Franklin Park on the North side via the Park Lane entrance. However, Forest Hills Cemetery is the most lovely, quiet and peaceful place to stroll, bike ride, or relax by Hibiscus Lake. If you are up for it, seeking out and viewing the grave sites of famous …   more ›

In a squeaker, Canary Square bested Lilac Sunday as the top spot to take Mom for Mother's Day brunch.

Well, this one was close! By a margin of two votes (and because no new ratings were written), Canary Square wins the week's contest for Best Mother's Day Brunch. The runner up was the traditional Lilac Sunday picnic in the Arboretum. For everyone who voted or rated a business, thanks!

And Jamaica Plain's Best Flower Shop is...

Readers went big for New Leaf Flores, known for the panache of their arrangements.

The results are in and readers say JP's Best Flower Shop is New Leaf Flores. New Leaf Flores won not only the poll, which counts half, but also in terms of customer ratings. Here's what Todd Consentino had to say in his 5-star review: Love these guys! They're awesome. They always have the most unusual, exotic flowers on hand, which my wife loves most. Thanks to everyone who voted and rated this week. Next week's contest is "Best Mother's Day Brunch."
