Watching the Super Bowl with friends can leave a lot of us feeling like information haves and have-nots. Whether you're looking to impress the sports nerds in the room with a few of your own facts, or you're simply a true connoisseur of arguably useless knowledge, here's some fun trivia for you about Super Bowl 2013.  Five Fun Facts About the Super Bowl So who will come out with the title? Finally, here's some actual useful knowledge to have heading into Sunday. Who: The Baltimore Ravens vs. The San Francisco 49ers Kickoff Time: …

JP Eats!: Coco's Lounge Opens in Egleston Square

A Latin-themed lounge replaces a dive bar on Washington Street.

The former Old Stag Tavern in Egleston Square was a dive bar legend: cheap beer enhanced and made bearable (and enjoyable) by an insufferable jukebox selection, X-rated video games, tacky velvet paintings and pool table heroes. When it closed earlier this year—rat infestations, noise complaints, seedy bathrooms and all—many wondered who would take over the Washington Street space that once hosted raucous drag queen nights and ironic Beyoncé sing-alongs. And puzzled how they’d ever get the stale smoke stank out of the place. Coco’s Lounge opened its doors this summer. Impressively displaying little remnants of its former tenant, the spiffed-up spot plays up brick-exposed walls with sleek wooden flooring, shiny fixtures and simple (generic) …

Respect is earned not expected. Again, I like the look and the theme. I was there last week:) It’s great to walk down the street and have a few drinks and not worry about driving home. But horns beeping at 1 am and people yelling on my street is not good start. Joe we will let time tell if you and your staff respect your neighbors :)   more ›

Tonic Aims to Open on Saturday in Jamaica Plain's Forest Hills Neighborhood

A long-await restaurant and bar, Tonic, will open on Saturday at 5 p.m., the owners said in a press release.

The first of two new restaurants/bars in Forest Hills is slated to open on Saturday. According to a press release from Tonic, which has taken over and renovated the old Griffith's space at 3698 Washington, will open at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Executive Chef Ryan Kelly was previously at Canary Square in JP, though his resume also includes stints at Haru Sushi and Clio. Next door at 3700 will be Eugene O'Neill's, an Irish bar named after the playwright, who is buried in nearby Forest Hills Cemetery. No firm date has been announced for their opening, though it is expected soon. Below is the press release from Tonic: Tonic, a vibrant new bar and restaurant in Jamaica Plain, is slated to open this Saturday, April 14th, owner Croan McCormack …

Meh, waiting on the pub next door to open. Places that call themselves "upscale" tend to wish for that moniker rather than embody it. That said, this place will do huge business. Closest cocktail place is Ten Tables' bar and the pseudo-suburban bars of Rozzie square leave much to be desired. Lots of folks want more than just a pint or a pub, and this looks like it will deliver in ways that Chuck …   more ›

Behan, Doyle's Win "Best Places to Celebrate St. Patrick Day in Jamaica Plain" Contest

The Behan and Doyle's edged James's Gate in this week's Best of Patch Readers' Choice contest.

Just in time for the holiday this weekend, we have a winner in the "Best Place to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day" contest. Well, make that two winners. Doyle's and The Brendan Behan tied with the most votes in our poll. Both of them are classic Irish bars, albeit with slightly different vibes: dogs are welcome in one while politicians are tolerated in t'other! James's Gate also had a good showing, coming in third on votes but getting bonus points for having reviews on their Places listing. Galway House also polled well. We really have a good collection of Irish pubs in this neighborhood. (And, I should add, we'll have another one soon as Eugene O'Neill's opens in Forest Hills. It was to have been called Napper Tandy's, but the owner said he …

Booze Map of Boston Shows JP Isn't an Epicenter for Bars

Tim Wallace of Bostonography used a heat map to visualize the liquor licenses held in the Boston area, including JP.

While the number of JP watering holes is growing, we still aren't one of the city's epicenters for bars. That's one thing that jumps out from Tim Wallace's amazing maps of liquor licenses and distance to liquor in the Boston area. For a discussion of the methods and meanings of the maps, please visit Wallace's blog, Bostonography, which explains things much better than I can. These maps are only for restaurants and bars holding liquor licenses. They do not include packies, convenience stores and grocery stories that sell alcohol. Construction continues on JP's two newest bars/restaurants, Tonic and Napper Tandy's, which are being finished in the Forest Hills neighborhood. For a quick guide to bars in JP, visit our Places listings for …
