With Paw Ensnared, “Max” Managed to Drag Himself Home.
Despite having his right front paw ensnared in an illegally placed leg hold trap yesterday afternoon, three-year-old Maine Coon mix “Max” managed to find his way home to his family. His owners, Victoria and Michael Kickham, were shocked to see Max limping toward the front porch, dragging the rusty steel trap as he walked. They were able to remove the trap from Max’s paw before rushing the frightened feline to Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, Mass. Once at Angell, emergency veterinarian Dr. Kiko Bracker administered pain medicine and ordered x-rays to determine the extent of the damage to Max’s paw. Luckily for Max, he suffered only puncture wounds and none of the bones in his foot or leg had been broken. Said Dr. Bracker…

MSPCA reports that missing Shih Tzu was recovered in Malden by police.
The MSPCA reports that Bella, a 9-year-old Shih Tzu stolen from MSCPA-Angell over the weekend was returned, and is now back in their care. In a statement from the MSPCA, The MSPCA-Angell is extremely grateful for the excellent investigative work performed by The Boston and Malden Police Departments--and to the public who played a significant role in getting the word out about Bella. The MSPCA-Angell asks that anyone who would like to make a donation to Spike’s Fund to help the MSPCA-Boston’s Adoption Center care for Bella, and animals like her, please do so via its online donation form. According to e-mails from Rob Halpin, a MSPCA spokesman, a witness saw a woman place the dog into her bag after filling out an application. The witness …

Dino the beagle pup suffered serious injuries to his back legs and hind quarters when he was struck by a snow plow in Milton in January.
In late January, a beagle pup named Dino made headlines when he was hit by a snow plow in Milton. Several surgeries later, the game little guy went home with his new owner, Glenn Inghram of Jamaica Plain. Dino's former owners made the tough choice to surrender him for adoption to JP's MSPCA-Angell Medical Center because of the level of care he would need if he survived. And survive he did, thanks to medical care received through the MSPCA Spike's Fund, which sets money aside for emergency care for abandoned or surrendered animals. Dino sustained heavy injuries to his back legs and hindquarters, which surgeons worked for days to close. Dino was put up for adoption earlier this month. Among the dozens of people who made adoption requests was…

MSPCA's activism touches every animal in the Commonwealth and arguably influences policy around the country.
[Editor's note: This is the third of a three-part series about MSPCA-Angell. Previous stories have focused on adoption and an overview of the organization.] The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded at a time when basic ideas about animal treatment most people now take for granted were not widely held. Founder George Thorndike Angell's early work to pass legislation around animal treatment helped to establish the very concept of cruelty to animals as an offense. When you think of MSPCA-Angell, it's easy to focus on the animals being treated with cutting-edge medical techniques and those available for adoption, but MSPCA's activism touches every animal in the Commonwealth and arguably influences …
