The English High School, founded in 1821, is the oldest public high school in the country. This is its sixthMore location, settling here in 1989 after moving several times in Boston.

In September 2010 the school implemented a radical restructuring program after failing to meet yearly progress benchmarks laid out in No Child Left Behind. 


MATCH Charter Public Middle School

This middle school opened in September 2008 with sixth-graders and has been adding grades since then. It is theMore middle school to the MATCH Charter Public High School in Allston-Brighton.

"Our mission is success in college and beyond," says Angie Isenberg, operations manager and assistant to the dean.

The school is housed in Bethel AME Church, in what was once the parish school of the former St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church.

Students receive two hours of individual tutoring each day and school days last until 4:30 p.m. Tutors maintain close contact with parents as well.

While the school has no fields of its own, it is next door to Parkman Playground and Park, where many of its outdoor activities take place.

Public transportation is available at the Forest Hills station (Orange Line).

Agassiz Elementary School

The Agassiz is a Boston Public School in the West assignment zone. It offers a sheltered English immersion program.

School uniforms are required — khaki pants or skirts and navy blue polo shirts.

Public transportation: from Forest Hills station or Copley Plaza take the 39 bus; from Dudley Square or Jackson Square stations take the 41 bus.

Friends of the Children-Boston is a mentoring organization providing children from at-risk or underserved communitiesMore the support and resources to achieve high academic achievement and strong character development. Its programs offer 12 years of comprehensive mentoring--beginning in first grade and continuing through high school graduation--with the ultimate goal that all children will continue on to college and become successful members of society.
