Spontaneous Celebrations is an organization that builds community spirit through the annual sponsorship and organization of parades, fiestas and festivals. Beginning with the 'Wake Up the Earth' Festival in early May, through its 'Lantern Parade' on Jamaica Pond just before Halloween to the 'Tropical Festival' in February, Spontaneous brings joy and change one party at a time, year after year. The origins of the organization date from the first 'Wake Up the Earth' Festival in 1979. This festival was, in part, a celebration of the defeat of the proposed I-95 extension through many Boston neighborhoods, the spirit of the coalition that formed to defeat that highway lives on.
