Buses will replace Red Line trains between Kendall/MIT and Park Street stations on Jan. 11 and 12, according to an announcement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
During the weekend Red Line diversion, MBTA buses will be the only vehicles allowed on the Longfellow Bridge, the announcement says.
However, bikes, pedestrians and emergency response vehicles will be allowed on the bridge. Bicyclists will be asked to walk their bikes across the bridge.
The weekend closure will allow crews to conduct work close to the Red Line tracks on the bridge, MassDOT said. The Longfellow Bridge, often called the Salt-and-Pepper-Shaker Bridge, is undergoing a three-and-a-half-year, $255.5 million rehabilitation.
Replacement bus service will begin Saturday morning and continue through Sunday night, the announcement says. Normal Red Line service will resume Monday morning on Jan. 13.
