West Roxbury Baseball Falls to Madison Park in City Finals

Hometown team looks ahead to state tournament pairings on Tuesday.

The Raiders of West Roxbury couldn't mount much offense today against Madison Park in the Boston City Championship at English High, and fell to the Cardinals 7-2.

Madison Park ace lefty, junior Manny Garcia allowed only three hits and struck out 10 to give the visiting Cardinals their third straight league championship.

"Manny is our top pitcher," said Madison Head Coach Michael Viggiano.  "Accolades to the players for a great job;  they never lost their focus.  They played smart, and for the most part, error free.  This may be the first three-peat in city history."

West Roxbury starter, senior captain Jordan Matos, kept his club in the game until the fifth, when Madison broke through with three runs to take a 4-2 lead.  Madison Park tacked on three more in the sixth from four straight hits to lead off the inning.

Matos was somewhat dejected about the result of today's contest, but knows their season is not over yet.

"I feel like we didn't play our best game, but we tried.  The best team won, but we'll get them in the states (tournament)."

Head Coach Eddie Ocasio had similar feelings after the tough loss:  "We had a great season, but right now we're a little disappointed.  They played better than us, so they won."

Garcia was the story of the day, as he didn't allow any earned runs and went 1-for-3 at the plate. He was jubilant as the team was awarded their first place trophies and plaque.

"I felt really good out there. It feels great to win. I'm so happy for the team;  they really came through."

West Roxbury must now wait a day until the MIAA announces the tournament seedings Tuesday, and with a team of eight seniors, these Raiders just might have the experience and depth to make a deep playoff run in June.
