SEASON PREVIEW: English Boys Basketball

"We are short, small, and scrappy," said Blue and Blue coach Barry Robinson.

With the temperatures dropping and the days becoming shorter, that means the high school basketball season is set to commence.

Leading into this year’s campaign are seniors Tyrone Williams (power forward) and Wiley Shipman (small forward). Blue and Blue Coach Barry Robinson had praise for both captains, noting they are “doing a fantastic job. This is their team.”

The coach, who said he has groomed Williams for the position since last spring, had additional superlatives for the young man.

“He has really taken hold of the leadership role,” said Robinson. “He’s the best captain I’ve ever had.”

Williams and Shipman will captain a team that lacks height, but makes up for it in its tenacity.

“We are short, small, and scrappy,” said Robinson. “We are very scrappy. We are going to try to make a lot of things uncomfortable for the opponent.”

Shooting looks to be the Blue and Blue weakness this season as Robinson commented that the team has not had enough opportunities to practice because of scheduling conflicts.

“It kind of has me nervous,” he said.

The Blue and Blue, who finished last year 6-13, will face the usually strong competition from Boston City League opponents New Mission, Brighton, and West Roxbury. But they also have two contests against perennial powerhouse New Bedford this season.
