Hingham Figure Skater Competing in U.S. Championships

Gretchen Donlan, a Boston University student, competes with her partner in the nationals this week.

The best figure skaters in the country have traveled to Boston this week to compete in the U.S. Championships ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics next month in Sochi, Russia.

One of the competitors, though, is only about 16 miles from home.

Hingham resident Gretchen Donlan and her partner Andrew Speroff will perform later this week at TD Garden in the pairs competitions, on Thursday, Jan. 9 and Saturday, Jan. 11.

Donlan began skating at age six because her older sister skated, according to her U.S. Figure Skating bio. She won the 2007 U.S. intermediate title and with Speroff were the 2012 U.S. pewter medalists.

Donlan's home club is the Skating Club of Boston. She is 19 years old and is a Class of 2016 student at Boston University.

Speroff is from Colorado Springs and now also skates in Boston. They began skating together in 2009. Their coaches are Bobby Martin and Carrie Wall.

This could be their year, Boston Globe Columnist Alice Cook writes

"Their chemistry makes them special, along with a more classic pair style similar to Russian pairs greats Gordeeva and Grinkov," Cook wrote in a tournament roundup.
