HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PREVIEW: English Spring Track Team Hopes To Establish Program

The Blue and Blue started their season Wednesday against O'Bryant.

With 15 athletes combined for the boys and girls team, the spring track squad heads into the upcoming season undersized, but the Blue and Blue are focused on establishing an enduring program.

“We have a small group…kind of building a program,” said Blue and Blue head coach Logan Jones. “It’s been a challenge, but all of the students are dedicated to getting better. We are building from the ground up. We are changing the culture because there hasn’t really been a culture here.”

Helping Jones facilitate the culture shift are Jordan Carter and Oshawney Williams, who will both captain the boys team.

Williams, who is likely to compete in the 200-meter and 400-meter run, has been the leader in the weight room for the Blue and Blue and routinely conducts the first 20 minutes of practice before Jones take over.

“He’s ready to go,” Jones commented about Williams. “He’s excited for outdoor track. He’s going to tear it up.”

Carter, meanwhile, is the team’s shot putter and has shown drastic improvement since the winter track season. Jones noted his leadership qualities are on full display through his dedication and strong work ethic.

“Carter’s been there everyday for us,” said Jones. “He is very hungry and willing to get better. He works hard and continues to work hard.”

Although the girls have yet to elect captains, Jones said a rookie, junior Jonne Walker, has been “very consistent and very enthusiastic.” She might compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump.

“She has never done organized sports before, but she’s eager to learn and is making improvements every day,” said Jones.

Adding to the challenge of having a small team is the fact the Blue and Blue have a truncated season with only about three weeks of actually competition. That allows the athletes who were on the winter track team time to perform and shine, but those that didn’t will have limited time to learn and test their limits, according to Jones.
