HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PREVIEW: English Baseball Team Ready To Rebound From Last Year

The Blue and Blue started their season Wednesday.

After finishing with a frustrating 2-16 record last year, the baseball team appears poised to turn its fortunes around this season having several key players returning to the squad.

“We’re hoping to be pretty good,” said Blue and Blue coach Kevin Glynn. “We have a lot of good, young talent. We will see what happens. You never know in high school baseball.”

Anchoring English will be its two best players from last year, Delvis Baez and Hansel Jiminez. The two, along with Juan Colon, are the Blue and Blue captains.

“They lead by example,” said Glynn. “They try to push each other. They help each other. They are helping kids with their homework and grades. It’s good to see.”

The skipper went on to lay lavish praise upon Baez. Besides being “smart as a whip,” the youngster is a dynamic player who resembles a coach on the field.

“He’s a great player,” said Glynn. “He can pitch. He can play first base. He’s our best hitter. He was our MVP last year.”

Jiminez, meanwhile, is a player who possesses a “rubber arm” and has the ability to throw runners out from the outfield.

Baez and Jiminez are slated to be part of a pitching staff that is expected to be the Blue and Blue strength this season. Finishing out the rotation are Alvin Baez, a sophomore who pitched well as an underclassman, and Nelson Barreiro, who recently moved from the Dominican Republic.

“We've got a good solid core for a team,” said Glynn. “We will see what happens. If some more kids make the grades, we will be even better.”

English requires student athletes to have at least a 2.0 grade-point average.
