"That Injury is Not Going to Stop Me" — Senior Leads English Volleyball to City Championship

Tracy Lynn Pagan does not allow injured wrist to prevent her from helping her team to its third consecutive city championship.

With her left wrist aching from arthritis, senior Tracy Lynn Pagan doubted if she would be able to play volleyball this season.

But on second thought: this was her senior year and she had to play. So Pagan began receiving physical therapy, helping her inch her way back to volleyball. The comeback came full-circle Tuesday as she contributed 24 assists, six aces, and two kills in the Blue and Blue’s 3-1 victory over O’Bryant in the Boston City League championship. The game was played at Burke High School in Dorchester.

“I have been playing for this school since freshman year and it was my senior year,” said Pagan. “I had to play it because I love volleyball. Since I’m from Puerto Rico, I’ve always played volleyball. I was like, that injury is not going to stop me.”

She added, “I put a lot of work into it. It took a long time, a lot of therapy, and it was really bad. But I’m better now, thank God.”

English coach Hardy Mondesir commented that it was will power that brought Pagan back to the volleyball court where she had a major impact during the regular season and help lead the Blue and Blue to their third consecutive city title.

“She’s phenomenal,” said the coach. “Like I said before, your quarterback is your setter. She’s definitely has the right mindset. Putting the ball to the right people, good things happen and that’s what she did today.”

English took the first two sets 25-17 and 25-16 before Mondesir placed his younger players in to gain tournament experience. They lost the third set 25-9. Mondesir then rotated his starters back in and they promptly won the set, and match, 25-11.
