English Girls Volleyball Uses Depth In Victory

The Blue and Blue defeat West Roxbury, 3-1.

With 16 players this season, the girls volleyball team is beginning to build a durable program.

That bodes well for the Blue and Blue as they were able to use mostly rookies to defeat West Roxbury, 3-1, Thursday afternoon. The scores were 23-25, 25-8,  25-7, and 25-15.

“It’s important, especially when you’re trying to build a program,” English coach Hardy Mondesir said about the copious numbers. “Because we don’t have a junior varsity team, it’s good to have the new guys be able to come in and produce. And see what the competition is like for the next year.”

With the victory, the Blue and Blue remain undefeated at 6-0. The Raiders, meanwhile, slip to 2-5 on the season.

“It was a great game,” said West Roxbury coach Nancy Smith. “The girls played hard. We need a little bit more work. And hopefully the next time around we’ll beat them.”

Mondesir rested all his starters on the bench for game one and West Roxbury took advantage winning 25-23 on a English mishit.

Yabriela Perez and Johanly Garcia-Amaros, two Blue and Blue starters, rotated in for the second set and led English to an early 10-1 lead. During that stretch, Perez blasted three kills while Garcia-Amaros served a pair of aces.

After cruising to the game two victory, English received a standout game three performance from Timilia Lattimore. She smacked nine service-winners during a 13-0 run that eventually resulted in a 25-7 triumph.

“She kind of red-shirted last year, came to a couple of practices,” Mondesir said of Lattimore. “She worked on her grades and that is why she able to play this year. She’s wanted to play since last year.”

English would place the match in the win column as a West Roxbury mishit gave the Blue and Blue the 25-15 game four win.
