UPDATED: English Football Builds Team Chemistry In Lead Up To Season
The Blue and Blue's first game, at home against Burke Friday at 6 p.m., was cancelled because Burke did not have enough players.
With the football season about to commence, one might wonder the status of the squad.
Well, don’t go asking Blue and Blue head coach Chris Boswell for answers.
“I’m going to be a Bill Belichick,” he said. “I’m going to be cold. Everything I’m going to give you is going to be vanilla, super vanilla.”
But despite his advocacy of the New England Patriots secretive philosophy, the coach did share that the team is beginning to gel. And after finishing 0-11 last season, Boswell expects an improvement in the team’s performance.
“We’re working hard everyday. I think we’re going to do better,” said Boswell.
He added later, “We didn’t do well last year in executing. I got to coach better.”
Boswell noted he wants his program to develop football players who are tough, smart, and athletic. And he also wants to instill in them a desire to go to college and play there.
“I don’t want any superstars, prima donnas,” said Boswell. “I want my players to run, block, and tackle.”
Another goal of the program this season is to build consistency. Boswell wants to rid the squad of an attitude of showing up whenever they feel like it.
Leadership will be important part of that, but the Blue and Blue have not yet picked captains as having a team comprised of students from both English and New Mission High School has made doing so difficult. Boswell expects the team will make selections after the first game of the season. That was supposed to have been 6 p.m. Friday at home against Burke High School, but Burke had to forfeit for lack of players.
“Every team is going to be tough,” Boswell said about the season. “Every game is tough. We are not going to take anyone lightly. Every game is the big game.”
