Jamaica Plain Residents Awarded Scholarships from John J. Moakley Foundation

Leandrea Ellis and Markabo Ibrahim were honored at a ceremony last week.

Two residents from Jamaica Plain seeking to further themselves with higher education were honored with scholarships last week, granted by the John Joseph Moakley Charitable Foundation

Leandrea Ellis and Markabo Ibrahim were among 28 scholarship recipients at the foundation's 13th annual Scholarship Award ceremony on Wednesday, June 4, at which more than $155,000 was awarded through 39 scholarships of up to $5,000 each for individuals pursuing undergraduate or graduate higher education or vocational education. 

Ellis, a graduate of Hyde Park High School, has worked in the Boston area and at Tufts University, and is actively involved as a volunteer in public service efforts, as well as having volunteered in Mayor Martin Walsh's election.

She has been selected to join the Apprenticeship Program with Local 6, and plans to continue her volunteer efforts throughout. 

Ibrahim learned English to adjust to an English-based education. Throughout her high school career, she balanced academic work and volunteer efforts, tutoring and mentoring with programs as part of Project Reach, College Map and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

She has been accepted at Newbury College, Wheelock College, Suffolk University and Lesley University, and plans a career in nursing. 

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh was also on hand Wednesday, when he received the Public Service Award.
