Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan on Monday plans to announce that the Asian Longhorned Beetle has been eradicated from the Boston regulated area, officials said Friday.
Sullivan plans to speak about the matter at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12 at the Arnold Arboretum, 125 Arborway in Jamaica Plain. U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Gary Woodward and USDA Deputy Administrator Osama El-Lissy will join in the discussion.
The beetles were found in July 2010 on the grounds of the Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Since then, state and federal officials have worked to treat 3,200 trees with insecticide in the area of Jamaica Plain where the beetles were discovered.
