Former Speaker Finneran Will Not Get Pension

A retirement board ruled that his criminal conviction in 2007 made him ineligible for a state penion.

A state board voted Thursday that disgraced former House Speaker Thomas Finneran is not eligible for a government pension because of 2007 conviction for obstruction of justice.

According to a Boston Globe report, the state's Retirement Board unanimously decided that Finneran, the Mattapan representative who was speaker from 1996 to 2004, was not entitled to the $32,900-a-year pension he would have received since his criminal acts were related to his job.

Finneran can, however, reclaim the $89,000 he contributed toward his retirement, but not the $32,000 in interest on his account.
