Casey Arborway Updates: Shea 'Square', Snow Maintenance Plan

Shea Circle, soon to be Shea Square, will become a tree-lined mini-park following the completion of the Casey Overpass.

Officials updated the progress of the Casey Arborway project at a hearing July 11, and the plans include a clearer view of the Shea Circle area and what public entities will maintain the roadways.

According to a PowerPoint of the presentation (downloadable here) at a July 11 Casey Arborway 75 percent design phase hearing, Shea Circle, on the east side of the overpass, will become a tree-lined four-way intersection, doing away with the rotary that leads to Morton Street and Franklin Park.

The slides show grounds complete with new trees, seating terraces and a bike path all lining a new lighted intersection.

The plans show that four entities will be responsible for clearing snow and ice from the area surrounding the future Arborway: Department of Conservation and Recreation, MBTA, Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the city of Boston all have a segment of the roadways. DCR will be responsible for Route 203 (the Arborway, as it is now known).

Overall, the presentation shows the plans are visually taking shape at the state level, but there are still meetings and final planning stages to take place. The planned closure of the overpass is summer 2014, with the new Arborway being completed in 2016.
