Walsh Taps Evans as Boston's Top Cop
The interim chief will get the commissioner's office as early as Thursday.
Acting Police Commissioner William Evans will keep his current job. Mayor Marty Walsh will remove the "acting" from the title and make Evans the city's top cop.
Evans, who has served as a Boston police officer for 31 years, took the reins of the department after Ed Davis left the Commissioner's office late last year. Walsh will formally announce the decision on Thursday.
"Commissioner Evans has been an exceptional leader to the Boston Police Department, and public safety is one of my biggest priorities. Commissioner Evans has been an invaluable resource to me during this transition period, and I know that his expertise and governance of the Police Department will be a key component to my Administration," Walsh said in a statement published late Tuesday.
The announcement did have its hiccup. Boston Magazine's Steve Annear noticed the original Walsh announcement of the Evans selection was copied word for word from former Mayor Thomas Menino's announcement making Evans acting chief. A new, original statement was released later Tuesday night.
