Tracking Program Leads to Recovery of Laptop

The following arrest information was supplied by the Boston Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The police report from last Wednesday, Feb. 1, included a robbery of a laptop from a man on St. John St. The man had the electronics recovery software "Prey" installed on the MacBook. The program, once turned on, broadcasts the location of the laptop and periodically take a photo of the machine's new surroundings. Using that information, the victim was able to lead police to recover the stolen laptop, according to the Boston Herald.

The Wednesday, Feb. 1 reports include:

  • Supplemental reports were filed in two incidents of sexual assault. One was from Dec. 27, 2011 at 6:02 pm and the other was from Sept. 2, 2011 at 12:01 am. By police policy, no location information is included in the blotter.
  • 57 Horan Way / Theft of motor vehicle plates / Nov. 8, 2011, reported Feb. 1
  • 186 Heath St. /Frauds (all other) / Jan. 12, 2 pm
  • 49 Eliot St. / Auto theft / Jan. 31, 10 pm
  • 725 Centre St. / Forgery or uttering / Jan. 31, 10:29 am
  • 48 School St., Roxbury / Assault and battery / Feb. 1, 6:13 pm
  • 9 Nira Ave. / Kevin Fernandez, 1103 River St., #1, Hyde Park and Emmanuel Mendez, 973 Tremont St. #3, Roxbury, were arrested and charged with possession of class B drugs with intent to distribute / Feb. 1, 4:49 pm
  • 930 Parker St. / Medical call / Feb. 1, 5:52 pm
  • 27 St. John St. / Street robbery (unarmed). A man was robbed of his laptop, though he recovered it with the help of police and a software program. See above for more details. / Feb. 1, 6:30 pm
  • 15 Walk Hill St. / Residential break-in (force used) / Dec. 19, 8 p.m. (reported Feb. 1)
