UPDATED: Rabid Raccoon Found in Jamaica Plain

The city says if you came into direct contact with the animal to let them know and call your doctor.

[Editor's note: The city originally said the raccoon was found on Brownson Terrace, which is near Faulkner Hospital. They later said that is incorrect. The rabid animal was found on Amory Street.]

A raccoon picked up Thursday evening on Amory Street tested positive for rabies, according to the city.

Boston Public Health Commission officials are asking anyone who had direct contact with the rabid raccoon to notify them and to contact their healthcare provider for preventative treatment.

"Persons who did not touch the raccoon are not at any risk,’’ said Dr. Anita Barry, director of the Infectious Disease Bureau at the Boston Public Health Commission, in a press release.

The person who reported the rabid animal was not bitten, according to Katinka Podmaniczky of the health commission.

The commission says pets that may have had direct contact with the raccoon should be evaluated by their veterinarian.

Here is the commission's description of rabies:

Rabies is a virus that attacks the brain and nervous system. The rabies virus is spread through the saliva of a rabid animal, usually because a rabid animal bites or scratches another person or animal. The virus may also get into the body through open cuts or wounds, or through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Once people get the virus, it spreads through the body and is often fatal. Prompt preventive treatment is very effective in preventing rabies in people who have been exposed.

Friday evening health officials plan to post fliers in the neighborhood, which borders West Roxbury and Brookline, advising anyone who had contact with the raccoon to contact their healthcare provider and notify the Boston Public Health Commission at 617-534-5611.
