Police report on crime activity in Jamaica Plain at monthly community meeting

December continued to be a busy month for police officers in Jamaica Plain. Community Service Officer Bill Jones and Sgt. Eric Krause reviewed crime statistics, safety tips and a new system for registering the most dangerous offenders in the district Thursday night at the .

The meeting was held at the District E-13 station, which mostly overlaps with JP, but includes sections north and east of the center of Egleston Square that are considered Roxbury

Sex offenders are required to register with the police. The persons most likely to re-offend are termed by the state as "Level 3" offenders. District E-13 will now keep track of Level 3 sex offenders who are also patients at the in Jamaica Plain. As of Dec. 22, there were 13 registered Level 3 sex offenders at the Shattuck and the neighborhood had 12 listed offenders with Jamaica Plain addresses. Police decided to extend the registry after alleged attacks in the Franklin Park area over the past few months. In addition to the widely-publicized attack on a in November, there were two attacks near the park but outside the E-13 police district.

It is important to note that people on the sex offender registry are not wanted by police. It is a crime to unlawfully discriminate against them.

Statistics for the most serious crimes in the E-13 District during the month of December included the following:

  • one homicide (the deceased was Gail Miles of Wardman Road in Roxbury. She was the first African-American police officer in Watertown.)
  • three cases of rape and attempted rape
  • one indecent assault and battery
  • nine robberies
  • 20 aggravated assaults
  • one auto theft

Police also reported that December saw the following incidents:

  • Five commercial burglaries
  • 20 residential burglaries
  • 27 larcenies
  • 12 drug arrests
  • No arrests for prostitution, firearms and there were no firearm recoveries

In a three-year review of the most serious categories of crime, police said statistics show that the rate of crimes increased in commercial burglary with 12 being reported in 2009 and 10 in 2010. December also saw an alarming rate of armed robberies committed by juveniles in the Stony Brook area, with multiple arrests made.
