More Shoplifters Arrested in Hyde Square

The area had a rash of shoplifters arrested over the weekend.

Two were arrested after attempting to steal cosmetics from CVS in Hyde Square over the weekend.

Violet Santiago and Jamie Rodriguez, both of Jamaica Plain, were arrested Sunday after police were alerted by CVS employees that they were concealing cosmetics.

Santiago attempted to conceal cosmetic products in her coat pocket, according to a police report. When police arrived and questioned here, she began scattering the items throughout the store. After a brief struggle with police, she was arrested and charged with shoplifting items worth between $50 and $199 and resisting arrest.

Rodriguez, who had left the store moments before police arrived, was later located in front of the 7/11 at the intersection of Centre Street and South Huntington Avenue.

He was holding a Dunkin’ Donuts bag containing $110 worth of stolen items, according to the report. He was placed under arrest and charged with shoplifting.

Bret, this is another case of where is the boundary. CVS is not in Hyde Square. In fact, I remember one instance years ago that the Pond Association claimed that area as theirs (when The Acapulco Resautant across the street from CVS was applying for expansion). The Hyde Square sign is on the other side of the intersection so CVS certainly isn't in Hyde Square. As well, the intersection of Center and S. Huntington is borderline.. It would have been better to report the second arrest in Canary Square, not Hyde Square.

Derryl, Agreed. I live here , right in the middle of the 2 squares and call the S. Huntington/Centre intersection 'canary sq' as the sign atop the pole clearly identifies the intersection. At some point around Paul Gore st we start to 'transition' to hyde sq as the sign in the rotary notes. Not a big deal for sure - but accuracy does matter at times , since so many here in JP like to speak for themselves and not be dictated to by paternalistic others who are not in their section.

Upon further review, this is closer to Canary Square. I could have sworn I've seen this CVS listed as Hyde somewhere but, when you look at the actual geography looks like it's closer to Canary.

As a life long resident of Jamaica Plain (and I mean generations old family) I have never ever called that area of JP Canary Sq. it HAS ALWAYS been called part of Hyde Square! Hipsters smdh...ugh

I'm with you, Patrice. I, too, am a long-time JP resident and my husband (now 60) grew up here. Anyway, the real issue here isn't about "boundaries" and who doesn't want to admit to the crime in their "square". The real issue is that all of us will be, if we haven't been already, affected by shoplifting, theft, robberies, and the related fact of the increase of heroin-, Oxycontin-, addicted population trying to steal to avoid being dope sick. This is a real issue and it happens in the restroom of Stop and Shop (JACKSON SQ.), BOTH JP CVS's ("the one where Flanagan's used to be), and the one down near the Galway. It happens all the time at Boomerang's. And it's easy to spot these individuals if we all become more observant of those around us and not our cellphones and earplugs! Fight and help addiction, and you will help fight crime and death.

Yes! Donna C. I agree with you there is a much bigger issue here, as "lifers" we've seen the changes in JP decades long changes and as much as things change they remain the same get your head out of your phones, pull the earphones out of your ears this city is crying and people are oblivious to their surroundings.

Does anyone remember when Jackson Square was just called Bronley-Heath? Things change.

But do we really need to now refer to Canary Square like it's an "official" JP neighborhood? It's three blocks from Hyde Square, for Pete's sake. And when the article says the CVS is in Hyde Square, did anyone not know which CVS they were talking about? Annoying.
