Five Police Agencies Respond to Large Fight at Mount Ida College

The incident happened Thursday night after a talent show on campus.

Updated 10:47 a.m. with a statement from Mount Ida.

Officers from the Newton, Boston, Waltham, Brookline and State Police departments responded to Mount Ida College Thursday night after a large fight broke out on campus, police said.

According to police reports, officers were dispatched to Carlson Hall around 10:40 p.m. Thursday for a "large disturbance" that involved approximately 100 people. 

The disturbance was made up of multiple fights, police said, and occurred during a talent show hosted by the Diversity and Inclusion Office.

According to scanner reports, pepper spray was deployed during the incident.

As a result of the disturbance, one man was arrested, three men were summonsed and one person was treated by EMS for minor exposure to pepper spray.

Randy Carius, 21, of 39 Tennis Road #1, Mattapan, was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a police officer, reports said. 

In addition, a 22-year-old Connecticut man, a 21-year-old Florida man and an 18-year-old Boston man were all summonsed for disorderly conduct.

In a statement sent to Newton Patch Friday morning, Mount Ida College officials said they are investigating the events that led to Thursday night's altercation.

The school and police departments are taking "immediate action," the statement said, including suspending students who were involved. 

The full statement from Mount Ida is as follows:

The College is investigating the circumstances and events leading to the altercation that occurred last night following a student event.  We are working closely with local law enforcement and are taking immediate action, including suspending students who were involved, pending further disciplinary proceedings. Mount Ida College has a zero-tolerance policy towards violence of any kind as the safety of our students is paramount.

According to reports, officers did not start to clear the scene until 1:30 a.m. Some officers remained on campus throughout the evening to prevent further incidents, police said.
