Firefighters Battling Two-Alarm Fire at Vocational School

A two-alarm fire was reported Tuesday evening at the vocational school in Wakefield.

Firefighters are on the scene of a two alarm fire at Northeast Metropolitan Technical High School on Tuesday evening.

Several public safety-oriented accounts on Twitter report that the fire started in the carpentry shop area and extended to the roof.

The fire was first reported at about 5:30 p.m. In addition to Wakefield, crews from several other communities, including Lynnfield and Stoneham, were called to assist.

At one point, flames were reportedly showing from the roof of the school.

There was a basketball game going on at the time of the fire and the players and fans were alerted to the fire when the smoke alarms were activated, according to athletic trainer Terri Pillsbury, who was at the game.

Everyone got out of the building OK and no injuries were reported.

Northeast Vocational was playing Greater Lowell Lowell Technical High School and the team was up 16-0 at the time of the fire.

The school is located at the end of Hemlock Road, behind Wakefield Memorial High School and adjacent to the entrance to Breakheart Reservation.

I was in a class there tonight. It was going pretty good by the time we got out. You could see the flames inside and smoke was just bellowing out. It was a very orderly evacuation. I would say that WFD showed up within 2 minutes after the alarm sounded. I don't think anyone was hurt but it looks like it's going to be a long night for the firefighters as I think the fire was reaching the roof as I left. I doubt there'll be classes there tomorrow.
