JP Resident Directs Documentary Highlighting Rare Skin Disease

"In Crystal Skin" focuses on individuals suffering from Epidermolysis Bullosa.

A Jamaica Plain resident and filmmaker is looking to bring a new documentary about a rare skin disease to a wider audience.

Michaela O’Brien has served as the Director, Producer and Cinematographer of the film "In Crystal Skin," which focuses on four individuals challenged by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare skin disease.

O'Brien, along with fellow filmmaker Melissa Langer, traveled between Bogota, Colombia and Boston during the course of three years, and are currently looking to finish the film for festival submission by Spring 2015.

"What inspired us to create this film in the first place -- the voices and stories of those living with a rare disease -- is what drives us to complete a documentary, which will reach a wide audience," O'Brien said.

The two have also launched an IndieGoGo campaign to help raise financial support for the effort as they look to bring the documentary to the festival circuit next year. Thus far, the campaign has raised $13,720 toward its goal of $25,000.
